Yankees finalize deals for Brett Gardner, Justin Wilson Brett Gardner and the New York Yankees have finalized a $5.15 million, one-year contract for the outfielder to return for a 14th season
Designated for assignment Allen was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Tuesday.
Impact Allen will be the roster casualty as the Yankees add new signee Justin Wilson to the roster. Allen was never likely to be anything more than a bench option, as he's hit .239/.298/.343 in 221 career MLB games and hasn't graded out well in center field despite good speed. Whether or not that's an attractive enough package to convince another team to claim him off waivers remains to be seen.

Impact Allen started the game in right field and batted ninth in his first game with San Diego. He wasted little time showing off his 92nd-percentile sprint speed, swiping second base after being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning. Allen should eventually settle into a reserve role, but he could get regular starts for as long as Wil Myers (undisclosed) remains on the injured list.

Impact Clevinger is clearly the headliner here, with Cleveland adding Allen from its deep stable of outfielders as seemingly little more than a throw-in. The San Diego native has good speed, stealing 31 bases in 220 career games, but that hasn't actually translated to positive marks defensively in center field. Even if he were a better defender in center, his .239/.295/.344 career slash line would keep him firmly in a bench role. He's unlikely to be in the lineup on a regular basis for his new team.
