Cubs open 3-game series against the Angels

The Chicago Cubs begin a three-game series at home against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday

Throwing, but not yet from mound Rodriguez (shoulder) has been playing catch and doing strengthening exercises but has yet to throw a bullpen session, per MLB.com.
Impact Rodriguez began the season on the IL (retroactive to March 22) due to right shoulder inflammation. The Angels have been adamant that he's not dealing with a major injury, but the fact Rodriguez hasn't yet progressed to throwing bullpens may mean he's leaning toward not being ready to return when immediately eligible. Jack Kochanowicz and Ryan Johnson are getting opportunities to be part of the rotation early in the campaign.

Officially placed on IL The Angels placed Rodriguez (arm) on the 15-day injured list Monday, retroactive to Sunday Jack Janes of TheSportingTribune.com reports.
Impact Manager Kurt Suzuki has been adamant that Rodriguez's bout of dead arm isn't anything serious, but the Angels will still place the right-hander on the IL to begin the year as a precaution. Ryan Johnson will claim the open spot in Los Angeles' rotation until Rodriguez is healthy.

Set to be placed on IL Rodriguez (arm) is expected to begin the regular season on the injured list, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.
Impact Rodriguez is dealing with a dead arm, according to manager Kurt Suzuki, and the right-hander will require a stint on the injured list to start the 2026 campaign. Rodriguez described the injury as "not serious" on Friday, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register, but the issue is significant enough for him to miss time. In his absence, Jack Kochanowicz and Ryan Johnson will round out the Angels' starting rotation.

Plays down injury concern Rodriguez (arm) played light catch Friday and said he doesn't consider his injury serious, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Impact Rodriguez is taking a cautious approach in his recovery from a dead arm, but that's due to Rodriguez's injury history instead of concern over the current issue. Rodriguez called the injury "not serious." Still, it's unclear if Rodriguez will have to open the regular season on the injured list.

Managing arm soreness Manager Kurt Suzuki said Thursday that Rodriguez is dealing with a dead arm, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Impact Rodriguez played catch Thursday despite his injury, so it doesn't seem like the Angels are concerned enough to warrant completely shutting the right-hander down just yet. That being said, his status for Opening Day is unclear, and he could be placed on the IL to begin the season if he doesn't begin to feel better within the next several days.

AL West Preview: Cal Raleigh and Mariners look to defend their first division title since 2001

Cal Raleigh and the Seattle Mariners last season won their first AL West title since 2001, and hope to do it again this year
MARCH 19 • Associated Press
Fires 4.2 scoreless spring frames Rodriguez allowed two hits and walked four batters while striking out five over 4.2 scoreless innings in a Cactus League start against Cleveland on Friday.
Impact Rodriguez was a bit wild in issuing four free passes, but he kept the Guardians out of the score column thanks in part to a pair of double plays. Promisingly, he worked up to 85 pitches, and though his fastball velocity was a bit below its established norm at 94.3 mph, it's worth noting that the right-hander is still working his way back into full form after not pitching in any games beyond spring training last season. Rodriguez hasn't dropped jaws this spring, but he's looked healthy and has posted a tolerable 4.97 ERA with 12 punchouts (albeit alongside 10 walks) over 12.2 frames, so he looks to be headed toward a spot in the Angels' Opening Day rotation.

MARCH 14 • MLB.COM
Mixed results in spring debut Rodriguez completed 1.2 innings in a Cactus League contest against San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing one run on one hit and three walks while striking out two batters.
Impact Rodriguez missed all of the 2025 regular season due to injuries to his elbow and lat, so this was his first game action since spring training of last year. The right-hander gave up just one hit -- a second-inning double -- but struggled to find the plate, tossing only 23 of 40 pitches for strikes and issuing three free passes. The promising news, however, is that Rodriguez appeared to emerge from the outing with no setbacks while handling a normal pitch count for a starter early in spring training. If he can get through the remainder of the preseason healthy, Rodriguez will likely begin the campaign in the Angels' starting rotation.

Appears to be healthy for camp Rodriguez (elbow) threw a bullpen session Wednesday and doesn't appear to be facing any restrictions to begin spring training, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
Impact Per Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, Angels manager Kurt Suzuki noted Tuesday that Rodriguez will have to prove he's healthy during spring training to secure his spot in the Opening Day rotation, but the 26-year-old righty already looks to be off to a good start. Health was a major concern for Rodriguez through his first three seasons in the big leagues with Baltimore, but he displayed plenty of promise when available, pitching to a 4.11 ERA (3.98 xERA) and 18.0 K-BB% over 238.2 innings. However, after Rodriguez had his entire 2025 campaign wiped out due to multiple lat and elbow injuries -- including a debridement procedure in August to remove a bone spur -- expect his workload to be monitored carefully in his first season in Anaheim.

Rotation spot not yet secured Angels manager Kurt Suzuki indicated Tuesday that Rodriguez (elbow) will have to prove he's healthy and earn his place in the starting rotation, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander was acquired from the Orioles in November, but the Angels won't immediately guarantee him a spot in the starting rotation. Rodriguez was sidelined all of 2025 due to lat and elbow injuries and has had his fair share of health issues throughout his career. The 26-year-old seems likely to make the rotation if he can stay healthy, but that's hardly a given for the former top prospect.
