Starting Sunday Greiner is starting at catcher and batting eighth in Sunday's game against Cleveland.
Impact Greiner picks up his first start of the season, giving Wilson Ramos a day off in the series finale. Greiner slashed just .118/.182/.333 last year, so he shouldn't be expected to do much with the bat when he plays in 2021.

Named backup catcher Greiner has made Detroit's Opening Day roster as the backup catcher, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact Greiner broke his nose in early March and missed just over a week, but he was still able to perform well enough this spring to earn a roster spot. Wilson Ramos will serve as the starting backstop for Detroit, but Greiner will be the primary backup to begin the year. Greiner has gone 4-for-10 with a home run, two RBI and four strikeouts over 10 Grapefruit League games this spring.

Returns to lineup Greiner (nose) is in the lineup for Tuesday's spring game against the Yankees, according to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News.

Returns to catching work Greiner (nose) took some swings and did some catching Friday and could return to game action Sunday or Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact The 28-year-old suffered a broken nose after being struck in the face by a pitch last Sunday, and he appears to be progressing well in his recovery. Barring any setbacks, Greiner should be ready in time for Opening Day, assuming he's able to secure his roster spot.

Impact Greiner was fortunate to avoid any damage to his orbital bone, so he won't require surgery and should make a full recovery by the middle of the month. An absence for any length of time is still less than ideal, however, as Greiner is battling Jake Rogers, Dustin Garneau and Eric Haase for the top backup catcher job behind Wilson Ramos.

What Detroit Tigers' Grayson Greiner likes about teammate Wilson Ramos Detroit Tigers catcher Grayson Greiner talks Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, about the first day of pitcher-catcher workouts in spring training.
FEBRUARY 17, 2021 • FREEP.COM
Battling for reserve role Greiner and Jake Rogers will likely compete this spring to serve as the backup catcher in Detroit behind new addition Wilson Ramos, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact The Tigers signed the veteran Ramos to a one-year deal in January to serve as the No. 1 backstop. That means Greiner and Rogers will likely battle for the backup role, unless the team opts to carry three catchers, which seems unlikely to start the year. Greiner has never done much with the bat, but he does offer solid defense and a veteran presence behind the plate, so he is likely the frontrunner for the bench spot at this point, though the team could bring in additional competition at the position this spring.

Impact Greiner has accomplished very little as the Tigers' backup backstop this season, hitting .118/.182/.333 over 55 plate appearances. He now owns a career .194/.264/.304 slash line in 395 trips to the plate. Eric Haase was recalled in a corresponding move and will back up Austin Romine down the stretch.

Smacks third homer Greiner went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored Sunday against the Twins.
Impact Greiner played a big part in the Tigers' victory. He first came through with an RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the team's deficit to one. Two frames later he delivered a solo home run put the Tigers up 8-7 -- his third long ball of the season. Greiner has played primarily behind Austin Romine to this point in the campaign and is hitting just .143/.217/.405 in 46 plate appearances.
