Shielded from Rule 5 Draft The Padres selected Hawkins' contract from Double-A San Antonio on Tuesday.

Impact Hawkins opened the 2025 campaign with High-A Fort Wayne and had a 1.43 ERA in 32 appearances before moving up to the Double-A level. The right-hander pitched similarly well with San Antonio and could make his way to Triple-A El Paso early in 2026.

Sharp in 2025 debut Hawkins (elbow) struck out four batters over two perfect innings in his season debut Saturday for High-A Fort Wayne.

Impact Making his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2023, Hawkins was about as sharp as could be. He spotted 17 of his 24 pitches for strikes, induced five swings and misses and didn't allow a ball to leave the infield. The Padres will likely be conservative with his workload in 2025 coming off surgery, but Hawkins could move up to Double-A San Antonio quickly if he continues to shine in his subsequent appearances for Fort Wayne.

Sidelined with lat strain Hawkins has been on the injured list since May 9 with a lat strain and does not have a timeline to return, Baseball America reports.

Impact The 6-foot-5 righty notched a 3.60 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 15 strikeouts in 15 innings across four starts for High-A Fort Wayne before suffering the injury. Hawkins has a starter's pitch mix, but he is already 23 and there are concerns about durability and command.
