Returns on minors contract Contreras re-signed Wednesday with the Padres on a minor-league contract with an invitation to major-league spring training.
Impact Contreras was non-tendered by San Diego earlier this offseason, but he's now back in the fold with a chance to strut his stuff on the MLB side of camp -- at least in the early part of the spring. The 23-year-old right-hander has yet to make an appearance above High-A ball.

Released by Padres The Padres declined to tender Contreras a contract for 2023, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Contreras, who turns 23 in January, returned from Tommy John surgery to make 17 starts for High-A Fort Wayne last season, posting a 5.74 ERA and 1.67 WHIP across 53.1 innings. The right-hander got additional work in during the Arizona Fall League and pitched well in a small sample.

Impact Shortly before the All-Star break, Contreras exited his final start for Fort Wayne due to an arm injury, but he was never placed on the affiliate's 7-day injured list. He was cleared to rejoin the rotation just over two weeks later and should continue to build up his pitch count in his subsequent starts.

Apparently suffers arm injury Contreras left Wednesday's contest for High-A Fort Wayne with a potential right arm injury, Justin Prince of WFFT Fox 55 Fort Wayne reports.
Impact In his 11th appearance of the campaign, Contreras pitched two-plus innings and allowed three runs before leaving with what looked to be an injury to his pitching arm. According to Prince, the 22-year-old hurler motioned to his elbow as he walked off the mound. Further information about Contreras' status has yet to be released, but there may be heightened concern since he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020 and didn't pitch at all in 2021.

Impact Contreras hadn't pitched in a minor-league game since 2019, so the rust that resulted in three walks is of little surprise. The right-hander struck out 121 batters in 109.2 frames while posting a 3.61 ERA and 1.18 WHIP as a starter at the Single-A level during that 2019 campaign, resulting in some intrigue around the then-19-year-old. Contreras figures to be brought along slowly as he works his way back following the long layoff.
