INJURIES

Ambushed in first loss Rivera (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Orioles, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one.
Impact Rivera couldn't escape a laborious first inning in the nightcap of Wednesday's twin bill, tossing 41 pitches before his outing mercifully came to an end. Ranger Suarez (groin/illness) is on the cusp of coming off the injured list, so Rivera may not be sticking around with the major-league roster for much longer. The rookie left-hander has yet to work into the fifth frame in any of his four outings for Boston, recording a 6.30 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB over 10 innings.

Drawing another start Rivera will start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Orioles, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Impact The Red Sox had left open the possibility of Ranger Suarez (groin/illness) coming off the injured list to start Wednesday's nightcap, but they'll hold Suarez back for now and give Rivera another turn. Rivera has allowed three runs with a 9:4 K:BB over 9.1 frames covering two starts and one relief appearance for Boston this season. He's thrown 64 pitches in both of his starts and not lasted more than 3.2 innings in either outing, so Rivera is unlikely to offer much length Wednesday.

Game postponed Tuesday Rivera won't start as scheduled Tuesday against the Orioles since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact Ranger Suarez (groin) was initially poised to come off the injured list to start Tuesday, but the Red Sox then announced Rivera as their starting pitcher before the game was ultimately postponed. The rookie left-hander could pitch in Wednesday's doubleheader, but Suarez also remains in the mix to start the nightcap.
JULY 21 • ROTOWIRE
Making another start Tuesday Rivera will start Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact Ranger Suarez (groin) was scheduled to come off the injured list to start Tuesday, but the Red Sox will instead turn to Rivera. The rookie left-hander has made three appearances for Boston this year and has given up three earned runs with a 9:4 K:BB over 9.1 innings.

Runs up pitch count in Game 2 Rivera did not factor into the decision of the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Rays, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three acros...
Impact Rivera was given the nod to start in the second game of Friday's twin bill after a solid spot start against the Mets this past Saturday. He wasn't quite as good against Tampa Bay, as he gave up two runs in the first inning before yielding a solo homer to Junior Caminero in the third. Rivera ended up running his pitch count up to 64, resulting in the Red Sox relying on their bullpen the rest of the way. Ranger Suarez (groin) is on track to be activated from the 15-day injured list during Boston's upcoming series against Baltimore, so Rivera will likely head back to Triple-Worcester if such a move occurs.
JULY 18 • ROTOWIRE
Starting second game of twin bill Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that Rivera will start the second game of Friday's doubleheader versus the Rays, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact Rivera fared well in a spot start last weekend against the Mets, tossing 3.2 shutout frames. The lefty has been used mostly as a multi-inning reliever in 2026, as the 64 pitches he threw versus the Mets were his most since mid-April. Rivera should be capable of stretching out to around 70-to-75 pitches Friday, if needed.

Quiets Mets in spot start Rivera took a no-decision Saturday against the Mets, allowing no runs on one hit and two walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out three.
Impact Making his second major-league appearance of 2026, Rivera fared very well Saturday while giving up one single across 3.2 scoreless frames. The 23-year-old southpaw has impressed for the Red Sox in limited action this season, delivering seven shutout innings while yielding only two hits so far. Rivera was likely making just a spot start for Boston's banged-up rotation, as Connelly Early (elbow) and Ranger Suarez (groin) could both be back shortly following the All-Star break.

Monasterio, Yoshida hit 2-run homers as Red Sox beat Mets 4-0 for 8-game winning streak

Promotion official The Red Sox recalled Rivera from Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
Impact After turning in a 3.08 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 38 innings in Triple-A, Rivera will be making his first career start in the majors Saturday, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. It's worth noting that he threw just 29 pitches during his last Triple-A outing and will be working on three days' rest, so he isn't likely to pitch very deep into Saturday's contest. Brett Harris was sent down to Worcester in a corresponding move.

Call-up on tap Saturday The Red Sox are expected to recall Rivera from Triple-A Worcester ahead of Saturday's game against the Mets, Hector Gomez of Z101Digital.com reports.
Impact Boston has an opening in its rotation for Saturday, and Rivera is likely to cover multiple innings as an opener or bulk reliever. Rivera tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in relief against the Yankees in his MLB debut back on April 22, but he's otherwise pitched exclusively at Triple-A this season while working primarily out of the bullpen. He owns a 3.08 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 46:21 K:BB in 38 innings over 20 appearances with Worcester. Since Rivera tossed 29 pitches in his most recent outing Wednesday, he'll be available on three days' rest Saturday and may not be asked to cover more than 3-to-4 frames.

Red Sox try to prolong win streak, play the Mets

Optioned back to minors The Red Sox optioned Rivera to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact Rivera made his major-league debut out of the bullpen Wednesday versus the Yankees and was impressive, fanning three over 3.1 shutout innings while yielding just one hit. Despite the good first impression, the plan was always to send Rivera back to the minors so that he can stay stretched out as a starting pitcher. The lefty could get another look later this season when a need arises.

Receives first big-league call-up The Red Sox selected Rivera's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
Impact Rivera compiled a 0.90 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 10 frames over his two starts with Double-A Portland to begin the season before receiving a promotion to Worcester earlier in the week, but he'll temporarily bypass the Triple-A assignment to provide a fresh arm in the big-league bullpen who's capable of covering multiple innings. The Red Sox optioned righty Jack Anderson to Triple-A to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for Rivera.

Headed to majors The Red Sox are expected to select Rivera's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact Rivera reported to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, but he's now set to join the big-league roster before ever making an appearance with the WooSox. The 22-year-old has allowed just one earned run while compiling a 16:3 K:BB over 10 innings (two starts) at Double-A Portland. The Red Sox have an opening in their rotation, but they could limit Rivera to long-relief duty while he's in the majors.
