The Giants signed Cartaya to a minor-league contract Monday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Impact
Cartaya was released by the Twins last week after going 5-for-59 with 40 strikeouts at Triple-A St. Paul. He's a former top prospect and still just 23, so the Giants felt Cartaya warranted a look on a minor-league pact.

Gets chance in Minnesota
The Twins acquired Cartaya from the Dodgers on Thursday in exchange for minor-league right-hander Jose Vasquez.
Impact
Once regarded as the one of the top catching prospects in all of baseball, the 23-year-old Cartaya has seen his stock plummet over the past two seasons while his plate skills and power output have both trended downward during his stops between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. With Dalton Rushing also leapfrogging Cartaya on the organizational catching depth chart, the Dodgers elected to move Cartaya off the 40-man roster last week, even though he still has a minor-league option remaining. The Twins have swooped in to take a chance on Cartaya, but he'll still likely be headed to the Triple-A level to begin the 2025 campaign with Ryan Jeffers and Christian Vazquez locked in as the catching tandem at the big-league level.

ROTOWIRE
Booted from 40-man roster
The Dodgers designated Cartaya for assignment Friday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact
The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the signing of Hyeseong Kim. Cartaya was a consensus top-20 prospect in baseball just a couple years ago, but he slashed only .189/.278/.379 at Double-A Tulsa in 2023 and .221/.323/.363 between Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2024. He's just 23, so Cartaya should draw trade or waivers interest from an organization with a 40-man roster that's not as loaded as the Dodgers'.

Ends season on shelf
Cartaya has been on the 7-day injured list with Double-A Tulsa since Aug. 30.
Impact
There were also rumors on X that Cartaya was placed on the development list, but nonetheless, his final game of the season was Aug. 27. Cartaya hit .189 with 19 home runs and 117 strikeouts in 93 games for the Drillers in a very disappointing first season at the level. He is already on the 40-man roster and seemingly far from helping the big-league club, so the Dodgers' long-term belief in Cartaya could be tested this offseason.

Cutting strikeouts at Double-A
Cartaya is hitting .228/.288/.433 with eight home runs and a 20.9 percent strikeout rate in his last 32 games for Double-A Tulsa.
Impact
He is the third-youngest qualified catcher at Double-A, (older than Edgar Quero and Jeferson Quero), and his .238 BABIP on the season is easily the lowest mark of his career, so there's needed context when evaluating his surface stats. Cartaya doesn't project to hit for a high average in the majors, but he could still be a catcher-eligible player who plays enough to hit 20-plus homers per season.

Optioned to minor-league camp
Cartaya was optioned Monday to minor-league camp by the Dodgers.
Impact
Cartaya is arguably the top prospect in the Los Angeles system, and was protected from the Rule 5 draft by being added to the 40-man roster in November. The 21-year-old is likely at least a season away from the majors and will likely begin the season with Double-A Tulsa. Once in the majors, he has the talent to be among the best fantasy catchers in the sport.
