Impact Smeltzer followed Matt Wilser once again, but his outing was not nearly as successful as his previous one. A hit-by-pitch and a pair of doubles led to two Royals runs in the third. He was able to pitch around an error and a single in the fourth, but still saw his ERA grow to 6.59 on the campaign.

Smeltzer has worked regularly in a multi-inning role to this point in the season, and since allowing five earned runs in his first appearance, he has surrendered only three earned runs across 9.2 frames.

Smeltzer made six starts for Minnesota in 2019 but has appeared in long relief for his first two outings of this season, ceding six runs but striking out seven over 4.2 total innings.
