Could make Opening Day roster Garcia has looked good this spring, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Wednesday that he could "put himself in that mix" for an Opening Day roster spot, Randy Miller of NJ A...
Impact Garcia struggled mightily at the Triple-A level last season, posting a 6.85 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 90.2 innings. He also threw 8.1 frames with the Yankees, giving up six earned runs. However, he looked much better in his first spring outing Wednesday, hurling two scoreless innings during which he allowed only one hit. Beyond those numbers, the right-hander averaged 94.9 mph on his fastball, per Max Goodman of SI.com, after posting a 92.2 mph average velocity on the pitch last season. Further, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports that Garcia altered his mechanics during the offseason and is pitching with more confidence, strengthening the hope that he could bounce back from his difficult 2021 campaign. It's unlikely that Garcia will be handed a starting spot in the rotation to begin the season, but he could at least make the Opening Day roster if he puts together a strong spring, especially since all MLB teams will be allowed to carry two extra players until May 1.

Activated from injured list Garcia (undisclosed) was reinstated from the 7-day minor-league injured list Saturday, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports.
Impact Garcia spent a week and a half on the injured list for an unspecified reason, but he'll rejoin Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the final few games of the regular season. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will pitch again to close out the year, but he's in line for a normal offseason.
OCTOBER 2, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Goes on injured list Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre placed Garcia (undisclosed) on its 7-day injured list Wednesday, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports.
Impact No details are available regarding the nature of Garcia's injury, but he'll most likely be sidelined for the rest of the Triple-A club's season, which ends Sept. 30. After a promising six-start sample with the Yankees in 2020, Garcia was expected to vie for a rotation spot with the big club this season, but he ended up losing out to Domingo German in a spring training competition for the fifth starter's role. The 22-year-old righty then failed to perform well enough to merit an extended look in the big leagues, as he compiled a 6.83 ERA and 1.89 WHIP across 89.2 innings with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Struggling in minors Garcia lasted only one inning in a start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday after giving up four runs on six hits -- including three homers -- and one walk.
Impact Garcia was the leading candidate for a big-league rotation spot early in spring training and has made two starts for the big club this season, but he hasn't shown any progression in the minors. The right-hander has posted a 7.41 ERA along with a problematic 61:39 K:BB across 54.2 innings at the Triple-A level. Given the Yankees' recent addition of Andrew Heaney and the eventual return of both Luis Severino (elbow) and Corey Kluber (shoulder), Garcia may not get another shot in the majors this season.

Impact The 22-year-old was called up ahead of Saturday's contest and will return to Triple-A after a one-day stay in the majors. The right-hander threw 52 of 88 pitches for strikes and was unable to solidify a rotation spot with Corey Kluber (shoulder) sidelined for the foreseeable future. Garcia figures to receive another starting opportunity with the Yankees before too long.

Called up ahead of start Garcia was recalled by the Yankees ahead of his scheduled start against the Tigers on Saturday.
Impact Garcia spent the last month with the Triple-A club and posted a 5.17 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 15.2 innings across four starts in the minors. He'll return to the Yankees' active roster and could have a chance to solidify a spot in the starting rotation since Corey Kluber (shoulder) is facing an extended absence. Left-hander Justin Wilson (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list as part of a corresponding move.

Impact The 22-year-old has been at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the past month after making his lone big-league start of the season, but he'll rejoin New York this weekend in Detroit with Corey Kluber (shoulder) facing an extended absence. Garcia struggled in four starts at Triple-A with a 5.17 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB over 15.2 innings, but he'll now have a chance to solidify a rotation spot in the majors for the foreseeable future.

Demoted following spot start Garcia was optioned to the Yankees' alternate training site after Monday's start against the Orioles, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. He took the loss after allowing two run...
Impact Baltimore got to Garcia early, as he surrendered a solo home run in the first inning and an RBI double in the second. He struggled to find his command, issuing three free passes and throwing 40 of 65 pitches for strikes. New York should transition back to a traditional five-man rotation following Garcia's demotion.
APRIL 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Called up to face Orioles Garcia was officially called up as expected ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Orioles.
Impact The 21-year-old lost the fifth starter job to Domingo German after a poor camp, but the Yankees plan on going with a six-man rotation temporarily, so he should be up for at least a few outings. It's unclear exactly what he'll offer after posting an unremarkable 4.98 ERA in his six-start debut last season, but he lines up with a very interesting two-start week, as he's expected to face the Tigers on Sunday.

Garcia scheduled to start for Yankees at Orioles

The Yankees will start Deivi Garcia on Monday while the Orioles are expected to counter with Matt Harvey
APRIL 26, 2021 • Associated Press
Locked in for Monday's start Garcia has been confirmed as the Yankees' starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Orioles, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Impact New York will officially recall Garcia from its taxi squad prior to Monday's series opener. Though he lost out to Domingo German for the fifth starter's gig in spring training, there should be room for both pitchers to fill starting roles with the Yankees transitioning to a six-man rotation in the short term. After Monday's outing, Garcia will line up for his second start of the week next Sunday in Detroit.
APRIL 25, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Likely starting Monday Garcia will likely start Monday's game against the Orioles, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
Impact Manager Aaron Boone confirmed Saturday that the Yankees plan to start Garcia on Monday since the team is likely to utilize a six-man rotation in the near future. Boone said that it's possible that the plan could change ahead of Monday's game, but Garcia is currently penciled in as the starter. The right-hander made six starts for the Yankees last year and posted a 4.98 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 34.1 innings.
APRIL 24, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
May start Monday Garcia is in consideration for a start Monday against the Orioles, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact The Yankees have yet to confirm their starting-pitcher plans for the upcoming series at Baltimore, and manager Aaron Boone recently hinted that New York is likely to go to a six-man rotation soon. That leaves Garcia squarely in the mix for an opportunity to start, though he is not currently on the 26-man roster. The right-hander is traveling with the team as part of the taxi squad, however, so he would be available on short notice if the decision were made to insert him in the rotation.

Impact Garcia, the Yankees' top pitching prospect, has been traveling with the team as part of the taxi squad. He looked to be the leading candidate for the fifth-starter role coming into spring training before Domingo German won the job with a dominant showing in Grapefruit League play. It's unclear when Garcia would pitch if he is indeed inserted as the sixth starter, but the earliest possibility would be this Sunday, per Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record.
