Big day in extra-inning loss Mead went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Cardinals.

Impact Getting the start at first base and batting second, Mead took left-hander Matthew Liberatore deep for a solo shot in the fifth inning, giving the Nationals a 5-2 lead that the bullpen would eventually squander. The 25-year-old has mainly been used as a short-side platoon partner for Luis Garcia since arriving in Washington, and he's finding a groove in that role -- over the last four games he's gone 5-for-11 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI. If Mead keeps producing, he could begin to see more work at DH and against right-handed pitching.

Shipped to D.C. The White Sox traded Mead to the Nationals on Saturday in exchange for minor-league catcher Boston Smith.

Impact Mead was DFA'd by Chicago on Wednesday, but he'll rejoin a 40-man roster after being traded to Washington. The 25-year-old infielder has slashed just .238/.300/.317 across 445 plate appearances in his MLB career, but he posted a .908 OPS in Triple-A last season.

Impact Mead is a victim of the White Sox needing to clear space on their 40-man roster. The former top prospect has yet to establish himself at the big-league level, slashing .238/.300/.317 across parts of three seasons. Impact Mead had started in each of Chicago's last 12 games, but he'll hit the bench while the White Sox welcome Miguel Vargas (wrist) back from the injured list. Given that he slashed a middling .255/.300/.362 over that 12-game stretch, Mead may not have made a compelling enough of a case for the White Sox to continue giving him everyday at-bats in the corner infield ahead of Mead and Lenyn Sosa. The right-handed-hitting Mead will likely continue to play regularly against left-handed pitching, however.

Impact Mead has started eight straight games and 10 of the last 11 contests while playing exclusively at third base. In that 11-game span, he's gone 13-for-44 (.295) with three RBI, seven runs scored and five doubles. Mead also has a seven-game hitting streak and should continue to see regular at-bats so long as Miguel Vargas (wrist) is sidelined.
