Impact The 27-year-old righty actually produced 11 swinging strikes among his 69 pitches, but he couldn't put away any Atlanta batters when it mattered most. Abbott hasn't looked great since shifting back into the rotation, allowing seven runs in 11.1 innings over three starts in September, but the Nats' lack of alternatives will likely keep him in that role the rest of the way.

Impact Abbott will cede his spot in the Nationals' five-man rotation to Erick Fedde (shoulder), who is scheduled to return from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday in Seattle. Over his four starts for Washington this month, Abbott went 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB across 18.2 innings.

Impact Abbott never really found a groove Sunday as he gave up four homers in the short start, including three in the fourth frame. It was his second MLB start of the season, and he'd allowed just one run in nine frames with the big-league club before the rough outing. The 26-year-old righty saw his ERA climb to 5.68 with an 11:8 K:BB on the year. Assuming he stays in the rotation, Abbott is projected to face the Padres at home next week.

Impact Given the lack of existing talent in the Washington rotation, it comes as little surprise that Abbott will draw another start, especially after he looked sharp in his first turn against the Mets on Tuesday.
