Impact Holmes won't need to undergo surgery to address his fractured right fibula, and the Mets are optimistic that the 33-year-old will make it back to a big-league mound before the end of the season. However, manager Carlos Mendoza said that Holmes will need to go through a spring-training-like buildup once he's cleared to resume activity, which will add another month or so to his timeline. All in all, it seems like the right-hander could be looking at a mid-August return at the earliest.

Impact Holmes suffered a fractured fibula during Friday's game after getting hit on the leg by a comebacker. Manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game that the right-hander's injury will keep him out for "a long time," so the Mets will stash him away on the 15-day IL for now, and there's a strong chance he'll move to the 60-day IL whenever the Mets need to open up a 40-man spot. No replacement has been named to take over Holmes' spot in the rotation, but Joey Gerber will come up from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move to add depth to New York's bullpen.

Takes hard-luck loss Holmes (4-3) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Diamondbacks.
Impact Holmes ran into some trouble in the third inning, giving up a two-run single to Ildemaro Vargas, and that ended up being the difference. Over eight starts this season, Holmes has yet to allow more than two runs in any outing. He's at a 1.86 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 37:16 K:BB through 48.1 innings. The one knock is a lack of strikeouts, but Holmes has done an excellent job at limiting runs. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is projected to be at home versus the Yankees.
