Getting first MLB start Wednesday Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that McDermott will be called up from Triple-A Norfolk to start Wednesday against the Marlins, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Impact McDermott's promotion already appeared imminent after he joined the Orioles' taxi squad in Miami on Tuesday, and Hyde confirmed that the 25-year-old righty would fill the opening in the rotation created by Cade Povich's demotion to Triple-A shortly before the All-Star break. Over 20 appearances (19 starts) at Norfolk this season, McDermott posted a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP while piling up 129 strikeouts over 91 innings. Though McDermott should be able to continue generating swings and misses in the big leagues on the back of his mid-to-upper 90s fastball and a sharp slider, control remains a concern for the young righty, who has walked 13.5 percent of the batters he's faced in the minors this season. A matchup with a weak Miami lineup at least offers McDermott a soft landing spot in his MLB debut.

Likely to make MLB debut Wednesday McDermott is likely to make his major-league debut Wednesday in Miami, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Impact McDermott had previously been added to the taxi squad and the Orioles have since announced that Corbin Burnes will start Thursday, filling one of their TBD slots. The remaining TBD slot is Wednesday, and McDermott is fully expected to take it. The 25-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk.

Added to taxi squad The Orioles have added McDermott to their taxi squad, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Impact Baltimore currently has a vacancy in its rotation after sending Cade Povich down to Triple-A Norfolk prior to the All-Star break, and McDermott would appear in line to fill it either Wednesday or Thursday in Miami in what would be his major-league debut. The right-hander has collected a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk.

Looking healthy in spring McDermott (back) has struck out 10 over 6.2 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and three walks over three appearances in Grapefruit League play.

Impact McDermott finished the 2023 campaign on Triple-A Norfolk's injured list due to a back strain, but he reported to spring training at full health and has turned some heads with his performance thus far. The 25-year-old right-hander is ticketed for a return trip to Norfolk to begin the 2024 season, but he should rank high on the list for a call-up if the Orioles' rotation depth is tested at any point.
