Optioned to Somerset
The Yankees optioned Hampton to Double-A Somerset and resigned him to minor league camp Thursday.
Impact
Hampton underwent Tommy John surgery in February of 2025, which resulted in him not pitching for the whole season. As the 2026 season nears, the right-hander is still progressing for a possible return in May or June.

Could return to action in May
Hampton (elbow) has been throwing on flat ground and could return to pitching in games in May or June, per MLB.com.
Impact
Hampton underwent Tommy John surgery last February, so he didn't pitch at all during the 2025 campaign. The right-hander nonetheless remains one of New York's top pitching prospects and was added to the 40-man roster in November, as the Yankees opted to shield him from the Rule 5 Draft. Hampton is likely to spend much of the season at the Double-A level once he's ready to throw in games again.

Protected from Rule 5 Draft
The Yankees selected Hampton's (elbow) contract from Double-A Somerset on Tuesday.
Impact
Hampton missed the entire 2025 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February, yet the Yankees will still grant him a place on their 40-man roster to shield him from the Rule 5 Draft in December. The 24-year-old righty will likely be sent back to Double-A once he's fully healthy, though it remains unclear whether he'll be back to full strength by the beginning of the 2026 season.

Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Hampton underwent Tommy John surgery Friday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
Impact
Hampton had traveled back to New York to have his right elbow examined and got the worst possible news. If there's a silver lining, it's that having the operation now will give him a chance to return for the start of the 2026 season, or at least early on in the campaign.

In New York getting elbow tested
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Hampton is dealing with a right flexor strain and "something going on with his UCL," Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News report...
Impact
Hampton is back in New York to be examined and it sounds like elbow surgery is a distinct possibility. The 23-year-old was limited to just seven starts in 2024 due to elbow, shoulder and groin injuries. Hampton is one of the Yankees' better pitching prospects and, if healthy, likely would have began the season at Double-A Somerset.

Invited to spring training
Hampton has received an invitation from the Yankees to participate in big-league spring training.
Impact
Hampton is one of the organization's top pitching prospects but is coming off an injury-plagued 2024 campaign during which he made just seven starts. The right-hander fared well when healthy, posting a 2.41 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB over 18.2 innings. Hampton has just 5.2 frames of experience above Single-A ball, so he's not likely to break camp with the major-league Yankees, though a big-league debut sometime in 2025 isn't out of the question.

Goes on Double-A IL
Hampton was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Somerset on Tuesday with a groin injury, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Impact
Hampton has missed a large chunk of this season with shoulder and elbow issues, but thankfully this new injury isn't arm related. It's unclear how long the right-hander might be sidelined. Hampton has been limited to just 18.2 innings this season, tossing 5.2 scoreless frames during his time with Somerset.

Returns from Double-A IL
Double-A Somerset reinstated Hampton (elbow) from its 60-day injured list Tuesday.
Impact
Hampton was cleared to rejoin the Double-A club after giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and six walks while striking out 12 across 13 innings over his five rehab outings between the rookie-level Florida Complex League and Single-A Tampa. The right-hander had been on the shelf all season while battling shoulder discomfort as well as a right elbow strain.

Shifts to 60-day IL
Double-A Somerset transferred Hampton (shoulder) from its 7-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Saturday.
Impact
Hampton has yet to make his 2024 debut after he contended with right shoulder discomfort coming out of spring training. According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Hampton has resumed a throwing program, but the 22-year-old right-hander still looks to be at least a month away from joining the Somerset rotation.

Invited to spring training
The Yankees have issued Hampton in invitation to participate in major-league spring training, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Hampton was a sixth-round selection by New York in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft and split time between High-A and Double-A last season, totaling a 3.63 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and an impressive 145:37 K:BB over 106.2 innings across 20 starts. The right-hander logged 59.2 of those frames with Double-A Somerset, so it's feasible that he could open the 2024 campaign at the Triple-A level. If he continues to thrive in the minors, Hampton could get his first look in the big leagues as soon as the upcoming season.

Earns promotion to Double-A
Hampton was promoted from High-A Hudson Valley to Double-A Somerset on Thursday.
Impact
Arguably the top pop-up pitching prospect of the minor-league season, Hampton laid waste to the Sally League, logging a 2.68 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77 strikeouts in 47 innings across nine starts. The 21-year-old righty was selected in the sixth round in last year's draft and has yet to run into much resistance in pro ball.
