Blows save Saturday Valdez allowed one run on two hits in one inning, taking a blown save in Saturday's extra-inning loss to the Red Sox.
Impact Valdez allowed a pair of one-out singles before Bobby Dalbec hit into a fielder's choice that brought home the game-tying run. That was the first earned run again Valdez this season. He is now 2-for-3 in save chances with a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and five strikeouts across 5.1 innings. The 36-year-old right-hander has been solid to start 2021 and should continue to see closing opportunities despite Saturday's misstep.

Nabs first victory Valdez (1-0) picked up a win after giving up an unearned run on two hits while striking out three over 2.1 innings Wednesday against the Yankees.
Impact Valdez entered the game with two outs in the eighth after the Yankees tied it up and were threatening to take the lead with Gio Urshela in scoring position. He was able to get the game into extra innings by sending down the Yankees' top four hitters in order and was one out away from closing it out in the 10th before Kyle Higashioka ripped a single to right to tie the game up at three apiece. When the O's scored in the following frame and ultimately closed out the victory, Valdez picked up his first win of the season. The 36-year-old is quite the story, as he was out of affiliated baseball entirely between 2011 and 2015 and again from 2017 to 2019 before the Orioles selected his contract late in the 2020 season. Hunter Harvey is expected to be out for a while after suffering an oblique strain in spring training, which has allowed Valdez to take hold of the closer role. He already has two saves and a win to his name in three appearances this season, locking down games for an Orioles squad that has gotten off to a surprising 4-2 start.

Picks up another save Valdez earned his second save of the season Saturday against the Red Sox, striking out one while allowing a walk and a hit by pitch in a scoreless ninth inning.
Impact The Orioles didn't announce a closer prior to the start of the year, but it sure seems as though Valdez has the job, as he's gotten the save opportunity in both of the Orioles' first two games, with Tanner Scott pitching in the eighth on both occasions. He didn't make it easy on himself Saturday, allowing the first two batters he faced to reach base, but he got the job done in the end and should continue receiving save chances until that changes.

Collects first save Friday Valdez gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning during Friday's win over the Red Sox to pick up his first save of the season.
Impact The right-hander was warming up as early as the seventh inning in case starter John Means ran into trouble, but after Means finished the seventh and Tanner Scott handled the eighth, Valdez got his turn to protect a 3-0 lead in the final frame. O's manager Brandon Hyde will likely vary who gets save chances for Baltimore just as he has the last couple years, but Valdez is firmly part of the team's high-leverage mix.

Role in flux Valdez is being stretched out and could serve as a multi-inning reliever, but he also remains a possible closing option, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Impact Valdez pitched three innings in his last Grapefruit League appearance, lending some insight into his potential role with the team to begin the season. However, because Hunter Harvey (oblique) will be sidelined until at least May, Valdez could factor into the saves picture for the team as well. He played a valuable role as a reliever for the team in 2020, posting a 1.26 ERA and 0.70 WHIP with a 12:3 K:BB while recording three saves across 14.1 innings.

Stretching out workload Valdez will be stretched out during spring training in 2021, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact Valdez pitched at least two innings in four of his nine relief appearances in 2020, and there's been some speculation that the right-hander could serve as a starter in 2021. Manager Brandon Hyde said that the team will build up his innings during spring training and evaluate his progress at the end of camp. Valdez converted on all three of his save chances and posted a 1.26 ERA and 0.70 WHIP over 14.1 innings in 2020.

Secures third save Valdez tossed a perfect ninth inning Sunday and earned his third save in the win over Toronto.
Impact Valdez quickly disposed of Toronto's 9-1-2 hitters with just 13 pitches in a perfect inning of work. It was his third save in as many attempts this season, all coming during the month of September. The 35-year-old finished the 2020 season with a 1.26 ERA across 14.1 innings.

Earns second save Valdez fired one scoreless inning Sunday as he earned the save against the Rays. He allowed no hits and no walks while striking out zero.
Impact Valdez came on to preserve the Orioles' one-run lead in the ninth inning Sunday, and he picked up his second career save as he held the Rays in check. The right-hander was charged with a loss in his last appearance, but he's been mainly effective this season as he now carries a 1.35 ERA and 0.75 WHIP over 13.1 innings in 2020.

Impact Valdez relieved starter Jorge Lopez in the sixth inning and kept the Yankees at bay over the final two frames. It was the first save of Valdez's career. He has allowed just one unearned run over eight innings across three appearances. He's added nine strikeouts and a 0.86 WHIP this season.

Wins in relief Valdez (1-0) picked up the win Monday against the Blue Jays, allowing one unearned run on two hits across two innings. He struck out one.
Impact Valdez entered the game tied 2-2 in the tenth inning. After tossing a scoreless tenth, Valdez remained in the game after the Orioles took a 4-2 lead in the top of the eleventh. A single scored Randal Grichuk, who began the inning on second base, but Loures Gurriel was thrown out at the plate on Rowdy Tellez's double to end the game.
