Signs one-year contract Farmer and the Tigers agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.85 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact Farmer posted his second straight season of competent relief work in 2020, following up his 3.72 ERA from the previous season with a 3.80 mark over 21.1 innings. A big drop in his strikeout rate from 25.3 percent to 15.7 percent casts some doubt on his ability to repeat that number in 2021, however.

Impact Farmer entered in a non-save situation with the Tigers up 7-3, but he quickly got into trouble, starting the frame by allowing four straight hits. He almost gave up a go-ahead home run on a fifth straight hit, but Anthony Rizzo's deep fly was caught right in front of the center field wall. Farmer wiggled out of the jam from there, retiring Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber to end the game. Manager Ron Gardenhire said after the game that Joe Jimenez is no longer the closer, and Farmer, Gregory Soto and Jose Cisnero are expected to split save chances going forward based on matchups, per Chris McCosky of The Detroit News.

Impact Like a number of pitchers in this wild game, Farmer was hit hard. The righty entered the contest having allowed just one walk and no hits across his first five innings pitched this season, so it's probably best to just chalk up the rough appearance as an off night. Farmer should bounce back and continue to serve as a fairly reliable option for the Tigers in a setup role ahead of Joe Jimenez, who also struggled Friday and blew his first save of the season by allowing three runs in the ninth.
