Cut by Houston Lavastida was released by the Astros on Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact Lavastida produced a .250 average with one home run, seven RBI, 12 runs scored and five stolen bases over 80 at-bats in 24 contests with Triple-A Sugar Land, but he will now look for another opportunity elsewhere. The 26-year-old last played in the majors in 2022 with Cleveland, and he has split his time between Double-A and Triple-A over the last three seasons.
AUGUST 6 • ROTOWIRE
Heading to minor-league camp The Astros reassigned Lavastida to minor-league camp Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact Lavastida is likely to be part of a catcher committee at Triple-A Sugar Land this season after he spent the entirety of the 2024 campaign with the Guardians' Triple-A affiliate in Columbus, finishing with a .232/.334/.387 slash line, eight home runs and 26 stolen bases over 345 plate appearances. The 26-year-old's lone big-league action came in 2022, when he appeared in six games for Cleveland.
MARCH 13 • ROTOWIRE
Links up with Houston The Astros signed Lavastida to a minor-league contract Jan. 16.
Impact Lavastida, 26, put up a .722 OPS with eight homers and 27 stolen bases at Triple-A Columbus in the Guardians organization in 2024. The catcher got a cup of coffee in the majors in 2022 and is simply a depth addition by Houston.
JANUARY 28 • ROTOWIRE
Outrighted to Double-A Lavastida was outrighted Saturday to Double-A Akron.
Impact Cleveland designated Lavastida for assignment last Sunday and he made it through waivers unclaimed. He is off the 40-man roster but will remain part of the Guardians organization for the time being.
APRIL 29, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Designated for assignment Cleveland designated Lavastida for assignment on Sunday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Impact Lavastida is removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Logan Allen with Allen's contract being selected from Triple-A Columbus to start against the Marlins on Sunday. The backstop could report back to Double-A Akron if he goes unclaimed, but a team looking for catching depth could have interest in Lavastida's services on the waiver wire.
APRIL 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Sent to minors Lavastida was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Lavastida went 2-for-13 in 10 spring games and was unable to win the job of Cleveland's backup catcher. He made his MLB debut last season and went 1-for-12 in six contests. It appears non-roster invitees Cam Gallagher and Zack Collins are the finalists for the backup job behind starter Mike Zunino.
MARCH 19, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Could win backup job Lavastida could open the year as the Guardians' backup catcher while Bo Naylor gets more seasoning at Triple-A Columbus, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Manager Terry Francona left open the possibility for Naylor to "knock the door down," but it sounds like Lavastida could win the backup job behind Mike Zunino with a solid camp. Lavastida was an impressive offensive performer his entire minor-league career until he reached Triple-A in 2021. He struggled at that level again (85 wRC+) in 2022 and missed time with a hamstring injury. If Lavasitda looks too overmatched this spring, non-roster invitees Cam Gallagher and Zack Collins could figure into the mix.
FEBRUARY 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Returning to action at Akron Triple-A Columbus activated Lavastida (hamstring) from its 7-day injured list Thursday and assigned him to Double-A Akron.
Impact Lavastida, who was the Guardians' No. 2 catcher to begin the season before being optioned to the minors April 24, has been out of commission at Columbus since June 18 with a right hamstring strain. He'll get the chance to play regularly at Akron before potentially moving back to Columbus once he gets a few games under his belt.
JULY 7, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Goes on 7-day IL Triple-A Columbus placed Lavastida on its 7-day injured list Monday with a right hamstring strain.
Impact The Guardians promoted catching prospect Bo Naylor from Double-A Akron to replace Lavastida on the Triple-A roster. Lavastida, who broke camp as the Guardians' backup catcher before being optioned to the minors April 24, is hitting .225 with 11 extra-base hits and two stolen bases across 147 plate appearances with Columbus this season.
JUNE 20, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Cleveland Guardians add OF Richie Palacios, C Luke Maile; send Bryan Lavastida, Kirk McCarty to Triple-A Palacios will make his big league debut in Anaheim on Monday.
APRIL 25, 2022 • CLEVELAND.COM
Optioned to Triple-A Labastida was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Sunday, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Impact Lavastida served as catching depth early in the year but hit just .083 with three walks and four strikeouts while appearing in six games. Luke Maile (hamstring) will likely be recalled by the Guardians to serve as the No. 2 catcher behind Austin Hedges.
APRIL 24, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Guardians rookies Steven Kwan, Bryan Lavastida team up to snakebite White Sox on critical defensive play Kwan and Lavastida combined to throw Chicago's Adam Engel out at the plate in the fifth inning of Wednesday's doubleheader Game 2.

APRIL 10, 2022 • CLEVELAND.COM
Bryan Lavastida is part of the future — and, for now, the present — at catcher for the Cleveland Guardians “I’m getting goosebumps about it right now," Lavastida said. "(Opening Day) will be a dream come true."
APRIL 3, 2022 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Makes Opening Day roster Lavastida has made the Guardians' Opening Day roster, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
Impact Lavastida will officially serve as Cleveland's backup catcher to begin the 2022 campaign since Luke Maile (hamstring) is expected to require an IL stint early in the year. Lavastida hasn't yet made his major-league debut, but he slashed .289/.380/.456 with nine home runs, 51 RBI, 50 runs and 16 stolen bases across 84 minor-league appearances last year.
APRIL 2, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to land backup catcher job Lavastida is expected to be on the Opening Day roster as the Guardians' backup catcher, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Luke Maile (hamstring) will probably get that job when healthy, but it'll be Lavastida's to begin the 2022 campaign. The catcher spent time at three levels of the Guardians' minor-league system last year, posting a combined .289/.380/.456 slash line with nine home runs, 16 stolen bases, 51 RBI and 50 runs scored across 84 games. He still looked a little overmatched in a cup of coffee with Triple-A Columbus, but the 23-year-old should benefit from regular at-bats in the minors later in the season.
APRIL 1, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Shielded from Rule 5 draft Lavastida was added to Cleveland's 40-man roster Friday.
Impact As things stand, Austin Hedges is the lone big-league catcher on the depth chart, so Lavastida figures to get a chance to earn a spot next season. He has a strong hit tool and some power but will likely open the year at Triple-A.
