Called up Friday Zimmermann was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Cordell Woodland of 105.7 The Fan Baltimore reports.

Impact Zimmermann will head to the big leagues for the first time this season after opening the 2023 campaign in Triple-A. The left-hander has produced a 4.05 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 50 punchouts over 46.2 innings in nine starts with Norfolk this season. Zimmermann will replace Mychal Givens on the major-league roster after Givens was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, retroactive to June 1. It's unclear whether Zimmermann will operate as a bullpen arm or if he'll draw a start while with the Orioles.

Sent down to Triple-A Zimmermann was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles on Monday, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports.

Impact Zimmermann has been competing for a spot in the Orioles' rotation but always seemed to be on the periphery. The left-hander does figure to make some starts with the big club this season but for now will head to Norfolk.

Impact Zimmermann struggled last season with a 5.99 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 73.2 innings. He made 13 of his 15 appearances as a starter, but time is running out for the southpaw to establish himself as a viable part of the rotation. He'll need a strong spring to begin the year as a starter, especially with top prospect Grayson Rodriguez looking to make the jump to the majors. It's still possible Zimmermann opens the year in the bullpen or at Triple-A Norfolk if he doesn't show improvement from 2022's poor numbers.
