Johan Oviedo - Dealing with illness
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Oviedo was sent home early Thursday with an illness, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Impact
Oviedo made his spring debt Wednesday against the Twins but was wild in the outing, allowing one hit and three walks across 1.2 innings. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. Cora said Oviedo was under the weather for that start, which should help explain some of the command issues. Consider the right-hander day-to-day.

Brendan Rodgers - Sent for MRI on shoulder
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Rodgers will undergo an MRI on his injured right shoulder Thursday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact
Rodgers hurt the shoulder in Grapefruit League action versus the Twins on Wednesday when he reached for a ball after a diving attempt at second base. Initial strength tests were positive, but Rodgers remained sore Thursday, so he'll be sent for imaging. The 29-year-old has had major surgery on both shoulders previously. Rodgers is trying to win a bench role with Boston.

Johan Oviedo - Wild in spring opener
Oviedo allowed one hit and three walks while striking out one over 1.2 innings in Wednesday's spring start against the Twins. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch.
Impact
It was a rough Grapefruit League debut for the right-hander, who has battled control issues throughout his career. He hit the first batter faced and wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. While Oviedo threw first-pitch strikes to eight of the nine batters faced, just 15 of his 33 pitches were in the zone. Red Sox manager Alex Cora summed up the performance to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. "Erratic. But good stuff. We have work to do. But it's good for him to get his innings in and move on," the skipper said. Despite the wildness, Oviedo remains in the mix for the fifth spot in the rotation and has the inside track, according to sources, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Marcelo Mayer - Spring debut delayed
Mayer is expected to make his spring debut Friday on the road against Atlanta, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact
As the first games of the Grapefruit League ticked by, it was odd that Mayer hadn't played a game. It turns out his hitting progression was being slow-walked due to a July 2025 wrist injury that eventually required surgery and ended his season early. "Now, he's just adding to his hitting program. He's doing everything," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "He's just adding the velo machine and the Trajekt." Caleb Durbin has been filling in at third base while Mayer was held back. A better indication of how Mayer and Durbin will eventually fit on the diamond should emerge once Mayer takes the field. Each player has experience at second and third base.

Brendan Rodgers - Nursing shoulder discomfort
Rodgers was removed from Wednesday's Grapefruit League contest against the Twins due to right shoulder pain, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Rodgers looked to be in a considerable amount of pain after injuring his shoulder on a diving attempt at second base. The 29-year-old has undergone major surgery on both shoulders previously, with an operation on the right one coming back in 2019 to address a torn labrum. Rodgers is in Red Sox camp as a non-roster invitee as he looks to win a reserve role, but he could be headed for a lengthy absence.

Brendan Rodgers - Exits with possible shoulder injury
Rodgers was removed from Wednesday's Grapefruit League game versus the Twins in the fourth inning with an apparent shoulder injury, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Rodgers suffered the injury on a diving attempt at second base. He had a two-RBI single in his lone plate appearance before exiting. The Red Sox should have more on Rodgers -- who is trying to win a reserve role -- after the game.

Triston Casas - Yet to run, slide on repaired knee
Casas said recently that he has yet to test out his surgically repaired left knee with running or sliding, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Impact
Casas believes he will be ready to play "for some affiliate" Opening Day and doesn't rule out the possibility that it could be with the Red Sox, but it's unlikely. His rehab from patellar tendon surgery has come along well, but the 26-year-old still has some boxes to check before being cleared to play in games. With Willson Contreras set to man first base, the Red Sox can afford to proceed with caution with Casas. When Casas is ready to return to the big club, he will be in the mix for starts in the designated hitter slot.
