Optioned to Triple-A The Tigers optioned Sears to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact Sears will depart the active roster to make room for Justin Verlander (hamstring/hip), who was activated to start Saturday's contest. Sears posted a 2.16 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 58.1 innings in the minors this season but struggled mightily in the big leagues, allowing 15 earned runs in just 19 frames.

Headed to bullpen Sears is expected to pitch out of the bullpen at some point during Friday's game against the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact Sears had started in each of his last three appearances, but he'll shift to a relief role to close out the campaign after he was roughed up for six unearned runs while retiring just two batters his last time out Friday against the White Sox. Over five total outings with Detroit this season, Sears has submitted a 5.19 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB across 17.1 frames.

Can't escape first frame Friday Sears did not factor into the decision in Friday's 11-8 win over the White Sox, allowing six unearned runs on one hit and three walks while recording two outs in the first inning....
Impact Sears lacked command but was a victim of poor defense, as the Tigers made two errors with two outs before he surrendered a bases-clearing double and was pulled after a walk to the next batter. In five games (three starts) with the Tigers, the 24-year-old owns a 5.19 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB across 17.1 innings. With Jack Flaherty (forearm) potentially returning before the end of the season, it's unclear what Sears' role will be in his next appearance.

Hao-Yu Lee and Riley Greene each hit a two-run homer in a five-run eighth inning as the Detroit Tigers rallied from six down to beat the Chicago White Sox 11-8

Handed another start Sears is slated to start Friday's game against the White Sox at Rate Field.
Impact Sears will draw his third start of September after posting a 4.50 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB over 10 innings between appearances against the Guardians and Rockies. The rookie left-hander could drop out of the rotation in the final week of the season if Jack Flaherty (forearm) is cleared to return from the 15-day injured list.
SEPTEMBER 18 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in spot start Saturday Sears allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against Colorado on Saturday.
Impact Sears was recalled from Triple-A early in the day to make his fourth career MLB appearance (and second start). The southpaw got through two scoreless frames but then allowed two runs in each of the third and fourth innings. Sears did show good command with 51 of his 77 pitches thrown for strikes, but the seven hits he allowed were his most in a big-league appearance so far. Sears may return to the minors soon, as Jack Flaherty (forearm) could return from the injured list next week.
SEPTEMBER 12 • ROTOWIRE
Recalled ahead of start The Tigers recalled Sears from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.
Impact Sears will come up from Toledo to make what figures to be a spot start Saturday, as the team is expected to get Jack Flaherty (forearm) back from the injured list next week. Sears owns a 2.01 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across 44.2 innings in the minors this season but has allowed six earned runs in 12.1 frames with the Tigers.

Rockies head into matchup against the Tigers on losing streak

The Colorado Rockies are looking to end their five-game skid with a victory over the Detroit Tigers
SEPTEMBER 12 • Associated Press
Coming up for spot start Saturday Sears has joined the Tigers in Detroit and is likely to start Saturday's game against the Rockies, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact With Jack Flaherty (forearm) due back next week, Saturday's outing for Sears is likely to be a spot start. Sears has made one start and two relief appearances with the Tigers this season, authoring a 4.38 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 8:3 K;BB over 12.1 innings of work.
SEPTEMBER 11 • ROTOWIRE
Back in minors after spot start Detroit optioned Sears to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Impact Sears was called up from Toledo to start the second game of Friday's doubleheader and performed well, allowing just one run over 5.2 innings. However, he's returning to the minors to make room on the active roster for reliever Brant Hurter, who was activated from the 60-day IL. Sears could be back with the big-league club later in September should the team need another spot starter or a bullpen arm capable of covering multiple innings.
SEPTEMBER 6 • ROTOWIRE
Stingy in spot start Sears didn't factor into the decision in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out...
Impact The rookie southpaw came up just short of a quality start in his first MLB start, tossing 54 of 93 pitches for strikes and exiting the mound in line for his first victory, only to see the Detroit bullpen stumble in a 10-inning loss. Sears got tagged for five runs in four innings during his first appearance in late August, but over his last two outings he's delivered a 1.08 ERA and 5:2 K:BB in 8.1 frames. With the Tigers' playoff hopes looking very dim after getting swept in the twin bill, Sears could get additional looks in the rotation once the team shifts its focus to 2027.

Bazzana singles home winning run in 10th inning as Guardians top Tigers 4-3 to sweep doubleheader

Travis Bazzana singled home Brayan Rocchio in the 10th inning to give the Cleveland Guardians a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers and a sweep of their day-night doubleheader

Slated to start Friday Sears is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Guardians, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact Sears was called up from Triple-A Toledo last week and has made two appearances out of the Detroit bullpen, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk with four strikeouts across 6.2 innings. Across four levels of the minors this season, Sears started 12 contests and recorded a 2.16 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB spanning 58.1 innings.
SEPTEMBER 2 • ROTOWIRE
Pitches better Saturday Sears tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
Impact Sears allowed five runs in four innings in his MLB debut back on Aug. 23, but he looked much sharper in his second appearance. The lefty was impressive against a tough Los Angeles lineup, and he helped set up former Dodger Kenley Jansen to pick up a one-out win out of the bullpen. Sears may not have a ton of fantasy value pitching in long relief down the stretch this year, but he could make a case for a 2027 rotation spot if he pitches well during his audition.
AUGUST 30 • ROTOWIRE
Hit hard in MLB debut Sears (0-1) took the loss against the Royals on Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk in four innings. He struck out three.
Impact Sears, who worked in bulk relief for his major-league debut, didn't leave an encouraging first impression Sunday. The left-hander was the third pitcher to enter the game for the Tigers and threw just 45 of his 74 pitches for strikes, surrendering three extra-base hits on the afternoon and four of his five runs in the fifth inning. Manager A.J. Hinch said Sunday that Sears will get an extended look for the rest of the season, per Jackson Stone of MLB.com, but whether he'll serve as a starter or long reliever will be contingent upon Detroit's bullpen usage.
