Curtis Mead homers, Andrew Alvarez shines in relief as Nationals blank Giants 3-0 to avoid sweep

Curtis Mead hit a two-run homer, Andrew Alvarez worked 4 1/3 sharp innings in relief and the Washington Nationals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-0 to avoid a three-game sweep

Receiving steady playing time Gilbert will start in center field and bat eighth Sunday against the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact While the Giants could hold him out of the lineup against some left-handed pitchers, Gilbert appears to have taken control of a regular starting role in the outfield against right-handed pitchers while San Francisco is without Harrison Bader (hamstring). Since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday in the wake of Bader's placement on the injured list, Gilbert has now been included in the lineup in five straight games. Over his first four starts, Gilbert went 3-for-12 with a home run, two walks, two RBI and an additional run.

Hits first homer of season Gilbert went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during San Francisco's 10-5 win over Washington on Friday.
Impact Gilbert extended the Giants' lead to 7-1 after smacking a solo home run off Zack Littell in the fourth inning. It was Gilbert's first hit and home run of the season and the fourth long shot in his major-league career (across 42 regular-season games). He should see a fair amount of playing time in the outfield for as long as Harrison Bader (hamstring) and Jared Oliva (wrist) are both on the 10-day injured list.

Giants place Bader, Oliva on 10-day IL and recall Brennan, Gilbert

The San Francisco Giants have placed outfielder Harrison Bader on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and outfielder Jared Oliva on the 10-day IL with a left wrist...

Summoned to big club The Giants recalled Gilbert from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
Impact With San Francisco moving two outfielders in Harrison Bader (hamstring) and Jared Oliva (wrist) to the injured list, Gilbert and Will Brennan were summoned from Triple-A to restore some depth to the position group. Bader had been making regular starts prior to getting hurt, so his move to the IL could clear the way for either Gilbert or Brennan -- both of whom are left-handed hitters -- to claim a strong-side platoon role in the outfield. At Triple-A, Brennan (.956 OPS in 54 plate appearances) had been outperforming Gilbert (.289/.389/.400 slash line, 8.9 percent strikeout rate in 56 plate appearances) to begin the season.

Beginning season in Sacramento The Giants optioned Gilbert to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Gilbert's battle for an Opening Day roster spot lasted until the final day of spring training, but he'll officially head back to Triple-A to begin 2026 after turning in a .648 OPS through 37 Cactus League plate appearances.

Cleared to DH in games Gilbert (shoulder) has been cleared to serve as a designated hitter in Cactus League games, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Gilbert is working his way back from a left shoulder impingement and still isn't ready to play defense, but he is able to hit. The 25-year-old is in the running for a reserve outfielder role in San Francisco, though the shoulder issue preventing him from playing the field doesn't help his chances.

Shut down from throwing Gilbert was diagnosed with a left shoulder impingement Saturday, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact TGilbert will be shut down from throwing for about a week to allow his shoulder to heal. The Giants don't seem to be too concerned about his injury, which is a good sign that he won't open the regular season on the injured list.

Sitting after six straight starts Gilbert is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Though the left-handed-hitting Gilbert will retreat to the bench as the Diamondbacks send lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to the hill, the rookie appears to have overtaken Luis Matos as San Francisco's preferred option in right field. While the Giants faced right-handers in each of the previous six contests, Matos started just twice while Gilbert was included in the lineup on all six occasions. Over his last 10 games, Gilbert has slashed .353/.395/.706 with seven extra-base knocks, three walks, 10 RBI and nine runs.

Perfect at plate Monday Gilbert went 4-for-4 with a two-run home run and three total runs scored in an 8-2 win against the Rockies on Monday.
Impact Gilbert ignited San Francisco's offense from the bottom of the order, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances while scoring three times. The lefty batter took Chase Dollander deep for a two-run homer in the third inning, marking his second long ball of the campaign. Gilbert was batting .097 through his first 14 contests this year, but he's suddenly caught fire at the plate, going 9-for-15 with five extra-base hits and seven RBI across his past four games.
