Blanks Halos in no-decision Alvarez didn't factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one hit and four walks over seven scoreless innings in a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Angels. He struck out eight.
Impact The 27-year-old southpaw delivered his best start yet in the majors, blanking the Halos over 97 pitches (61 strikes) while setting a new career high in Ks and leaving the mound in line for his third win, only for the Nationals' bullpen to falter yet again. The quality start was Alvarez third, with all of them coming since the beginning of August -- over eight outings during that stretch he's posted a 2.44 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 41:19 K:BB in 44.1 frames. He'll look to stay sharp in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in St. Louis.

Falters in no-decision Alvarez allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 4.1 innings Sunday against the Dodgers. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact The 27-year-old held a 4-1 advantage heading into the fifth inning but was pulled with one out after giving up a run on a single and a double. Reliever Brad Lord then allowed the inherited runner plus a run of his own to score, tying the game. Alvarez issued at least two walks for a fourth straight outing and threw just 48 of 78 pitches for strikes Sunday while generating only five whiffs. He remains winless in his past 11 appearances and has a 4.03 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 43:27 K:BB across 53.2 innings during that span. A home matchup versus the Angels likely awaits him next weekend.

Blanks Miami in no-decision Alvarez didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Marlins, allowing two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out six.
Impact Alvarez was excellent Sunday, as he held Miami to just a pair of singles, though he ultimately came away with a no-decision as the Nats' bullpen imploded in a six-run ninth inning. Alvarez has now gone 10 straight appearances without a win despite posting a 2.41 ERA across his last seven outings (37.1 innings). Overall, the southpaw is 2-6 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 86:41 K:BB across 90.2 innings this season. Alvarez is tentatively lined up for a road matchup with the Dodgers his next time out.

Fans six in Tuesday's loss Alvarez (2-6) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings as the Nationals fell 3-1 to the Rockies. He struck out six.
Impact The left-hander failed to complete five innings for the first time in August, tossing 52 of 81 pitches before getting the hook. Alvarez hasn't gotten into the win column since July 1, managing a 4.36 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 32:22 K:BB over his last nine outings and 43.1 innings while going 0-5. He'll try to turn things around in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Marlins.

Gets no support from offense in defeat Alvarez (2-5) took the loss against Texas on Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over five innings.
Impact Alvarez struggled a bit with his control, throwing only 41 of 75 pitches for strikes and issuing three walks. However, he allowed just one run -- on a solo homer by Corey Seager. That was enough to send him to his second straight loss, however, since the Nationals couldn't muster any runs against Jacob deGrom or three Rangers relievers. Alvarez has been hurt by a lack of support of late -- he's gone at least five frames and given up two or fewer runs in each of his four starts so far in August, but he has an 0-2 record during that span. He'll look for a better outcome in his next outing, which is scheduled to be a favorable home matchup against Colorado.

Takes tough loss Friday Alvarez (2-4) allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Mets.
Impact Alvarez carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning before New York finally broke through. A two-out homer from Francisco Lindor and a wild pitch that allowed Bo Bichette to reach first -- and eventually score -- were enough to lift him from the contest. Despite taking the loss, Alvarez delivered an encouraging performance, allowing just two hits while throwing 47 of his 73 pitches for strikes. The 26-year-old has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 3.72. He's tabbed to make his next start on the road against the Rangers.

Gives up one run in no-decision Alvarez did not factor into the decision Saturday against the Reds, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two across 5.1 innings.
Impact It wasn't a flashy performance by any means from Alvarez, but he managed to keep the Reds off the board through the first five innings. He was pulled in the sixth after yielding an infield single and was tagged for his lone run after Max Kranick gave up a two-run homer to Eugenio Suarez, which also removed Alvarez from the decision. Alvarez has yielded two earned runs or less in each of his last three outings and has a 3.76 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 69.1 innings this season. His next start is lined up for next weekend on the road against the Mets.
