INJURIES

Sent back to Triple-A The Phillies optioned Rangel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday.
Impact Reliever Alex McFarlane was recalled from Double-A Reading in a corresponding move, but the Phillies will eventually need to break in a new fifth starter following Rangel's demotion. The right-hander was sent back to the minors after he was torched for five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Mets. Over six appearances (three starts) with the big club this season, Rangel has gone 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 23.1 frames.

Jumped early in third loss Rangel (0-3) took the loss Sunday against the Mets, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out four.
Impact The Mets got all over Rangel right away, driving in each of the five runs across the first and second innings. The 28-year-old right-hander at least settled in a bit thereafter to give the Phillies some extra length via two more scoreless frames, but he's still yet to work into the fifth inning in any of his three starts. Rangel will be tough to trust as a fantasy streamer when he brings a lackluster 5.40 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB over 23.1 innings into his next scheduled appearance against the Yankees.

In rotation to begin second half Rangel is slated to start Sunday's game against the Mets in Philadelphia.
Impact Philadelphia demoted Rangel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on July 2, but he was called back up last week when the Phillies required a fifth starter for the final time before the All-Star break. Rangel will remain in the rotation to open the second half, but he may not be in line for a permanent spot if the Phillies acquire a starter prior to the Aug. 3 trade deadline or elect to recall Andrew Painter from Triple-A and give him another shot in the big leagues. The 28-year-old Rangel has been a so-so performer through his first five appearances (two starts) with the big club, compiling a 4.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB in 19.1 innings.
JULY 18 • ROTOWIRE
Labors in second loss Rangel (0-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Reds, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out five.
Impact Rangel was inefficient Wednesday, as he tossed 69 pitches but couldn't make it through the fourth inning. The 28-year-old right-hander has completed five frames just one time through five appearances to this point, and it remains to be seen if the Phillies will give Andrew Painter another chance in their rotation at some point later this season. Through 19.1 innings, Rangel has a 4.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB.

Called up, starting Wednesday The Phillies recalled Rangel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and he'll start Wednesday in Cincinnati in what's expected to be a bullpen game, Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic reports.
Impact Philadelphia optioned Rangel to Triple-A following his most recent start last Thursday against the Pirates, but he'll be back with the big club to fill the open spot in the rotation six days later after the Phillies placed Lou Trivino (back) on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. Though the Phillies are labeling Wednesday's contest as a bullpen day, Rangel should still be capable of providing the club with at least four or five innings since he'll be pitching on normal rest. Over his prior four appearances (one start) with the Phillies, Rangel turned in a 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 16 innings.

Sent back to Triple-A Rangel was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after Thursday's 6-1 loss to the Pirates, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
Impact Rangel did not factor into the decision Thursday after he pitched four scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and four walks while striking out four batters during his start. He will now head back to Triple-A after combining to allow five runs while striking out 12 batters over 13 innings in three outings with Philadelphia following his call-up June 22. Rangel's spot in the rotation is set to appear one more time before the All-Star break, and the Phillies could go with a bullpen game in that contest.
JULY 3 • ROTOWIRE
Delivers four scoreless frames Rangel did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Pirates, allowing three hits and four walks over four scoreless innings. He struck out four.
Impact Rangel had trouble with his command Thursday, throwing only 54 of his 90 pitches for strikes, though he was able to tiptoe his way through danger to hold the Pirates scoreless over four innings. The outing was the first traditional start of the season for Rangel, whose previous three appearances came in bulk relief. Overall, the right-hander sports a 3.38 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 16 innings this season. Should he remain in the rotation, Rangel would line up for a road matchup with the Reds in his next outing.

Takes loss in bulk relief Rangel (0-1) took the loss against the Mets on Saturday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over four innings.
Impact Rangel pitched well early but unraveled in a four-run sixth inning he was unable to escape. Through three outings with the Phillies this season, the 28-year-old owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB across 12 innings. Should he remain in the club's rotation plans, he'd line up for a home matchup against the Pirates next week.
JUNE 28 • ROTOWIRE
Following opener Saturday Rangel will serve as a bulk reliever in Saturday's game against the Mets, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Impact Rangel allowed just one run in five innings while following Tim Mayza out of the bullpen Monday, so the Phillies will aim to recreate that success by having the two pitchers work together again Saturday.
JUNE 27 • ROTOWIRE
Drawing start Saturday Rangel is slated to start Saturday's game against the Mets at Citi Field.
Impact Rangel is set to receive another turn through the Philadelphia rotation, this time as a traditional starter after previously pitching in bulk relief Monday after being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 28-year-old righty excelled while working behind opener Tim Mayza in a 4-1 loss to the Nationals, striking out four over five innings while yielding one earned run on five hits and no walks. Over two extended relief appearances with the big club this season, Rangel owns a 9:0 K:BB in eight innings, but his numbers over a much larger sample at Triple-A have been less impressive (3.99 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 15.6 K-BB% in 70 innings).

Impresses in bulk relief Rangel did not factor into the decision Monday against the Nationals, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four over five innings.
Impact After opener Tim Mayza allowed a run in the first, Rangel kept Washington's offense in check and provided valuable length for a Philadelphia pitching staff that has been searching for rotation stability. It was just the seventh major-league appearance of Rangel's career after being recalled earlier Monday. He also impressed in his only previous outing for the Phillies this season, striking out five batters across three innings of one-run relief. Given Philadelphia's need for starting depth, Rangel could earn another opportunity as a member of the rotation. He has posted a respectable 3.99 ERA and 73:27 K:BB across 70 innings with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season.

Slated for bulk relief Monday The Phillies recalled Rangel from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday.
Impact Rangel is slated to operate in a bulk relief role Monday on the road against the Nationals. The 28-year-old fanned five over three innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen in an appearance for the Phillies earlier this season, and he holds a 3.99 ERA and 73:27 K:BB across 70 frames with Lehigh Valley. With Andrew Painter back in the minors, Rangel could get a chance to stick around as the fifth starter/bulk reliever.
