DFA'd by Angels Eaton was designated for assignment by the Angels on Sunday.

Impact Eaton signed with the Angels over the All-Star break after being let go by the White Sox, and he's once again lost his spot on a big-league roster. The 32-year-old appeared in 26 games for the Halos and slashed .200/.232/.277 in 69 plate appearances, which is worse than his numbers (.201/.298/.344) with the White Sox.

Taking grounders at first base Eaton has been getting reps at first base in anticipation of possibly being needed to field the position during contests in National League parks, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

Impact Jared Walsh (chest) has yet to be activated from the injured list, so the Angels are somewhat shorthanded at first base for this weekend's interleague series against the Dodgers. With the games being played at Dodger Stadium, the team has had both Eaton and Justin Upton take grounders in anticipation of a possible in-game move that requires coverage at first. Eaton has started only once since Jo Adell was promoted to the big leagues Aug. 2 and isn't starting Saturday in Game 2 of the crosstown clash.

Impact Eaton will hit the open market after no organization was willing to put a waiver claim in for the veteran outfielder and the money remaining on his one-year, $7 million deal when Chicago designated him for assignment last week. The 32-year-old has long been one of baseball's better contact hitters, but he's taken a big step back in that department in 2021. Over his 219 plate appearances, Eaton struck out at a 25.1 percent clip -- well above his 17.3 percent career rate. Eaton's declining bat-to-ball skills and lack of power will likely force him to settle for a depth role in the outfield if he finds an opportunity with another club.
