Jackson Suber leads a day of surprises at Birkdale with a 65 in his first British Open
So much focus was on the new Royal Birkdale

MC at Scottish Open
Smalley missed the cut by two strokes at the Genesis Scottish Open following a two-under 68 in the second round.
Impact
Smalley put himself on the back foot with a two-over 72 in the opening round. He needed to gain four strokes to make the two-under cut line and made a respectable effort Friday, but his four birdies in the second round were countered by two bogeys. Smalley was actually one of the better players off the tee, ranking ninth in SG: Off-the-Tee in the second round. However, he lose 2.28 strokes in his approach game across his two rounds, and his poor putting performance Thursday lost him 1.19 strokes in the first round. Smalley has missed the cut in three of his last four tournaments, including the U.S. Open, and his only made cut in that span was a T47 at the Travelers Championship two weeks ago. Next week will be the American's debut at The Open Championship, hosted by Royal Birkdale.

T47 at Travelers Championship
Smalley fired a six-under 64 in the final round of the Travelers Championship to finish tied for 47th.
Impact
Smalley saved his best round for last, but he still finished in the bottom half of the leaderboard due to his one-over 71 scores Thursday and Saturday. He finished the tournament in the top-25 in GIR, SG: Putting and birdies but ranked 52nd and 63rd in SG: Approach and Around, respectively, losing 4.64 strokes between those two categories. Smalley was on a role earlier in the year, including a T2 at the PGA Championship and T3 at the Charles Schwab Challenge two weeks later, but he has finished MC-MC-T47 over his last three tournaments. Smalley's next outing will take place in two weeks at the Genesis Scottish Open, where he finished T10 in 2022, MC in 2023 and T34 last year.

Humbled at Muirfield
Smalley posted a 15-over score through the first two rounds at the Memorial Tournament to miss the cut by 10 strokes.
Impact
Smalley had three top-3 finishes across his five outings prior to this week and was in the best form of his PGA Tour career heading into the Memorial. Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, his run of good play came to a crashing halt at Muirfield with a disastrous 11-over 83 in the first round that included three double bogeys, five bogeys and zero birdies. He ended Thursday's round dead last in both SG: Off-the-Tee and Around-the-Green, connecting on just five of 14 fairways while going 8-for-18 on GIR. Hopefully for Smalley, it's just a blip in the radar as he prepares for the U.S. Open Championship in two weeks time, which will be his debut at the major and first appearance at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Continues run of strong play
Smalley closed with a two-under 68 on Sunday to finish in a tie for third place at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Impact
Smalley showed no signs of a hangover after his strong T2 finish at the PGA Championship a couple weeks ago. He again put himself right in contention for his first PGA Tour win. Smalley got off to a slow start with no birdies in his first 10 holes, but closed with circles on 11, 12 and 18 to secure a T3 finish. It was just a shot shy of joining the playoff with Russell Henley and Eric Cole. Smalley gained strokes across the board this week while ranking second in GIR's and third in scrambling. This is now his seventh straight finish of T21 or better, with four of those being top-7 finishes. Smalley will look to keep things rolling next week at the Memorial Tournament.

Can't hang onto 54-hole lead at PGA
Smalley carded an even-par 70 in the final round of the PGA Championship to finish in a two-way tie for second place with Jon Rahm.
Impact
Smalley came into the final round with a two-shot lead on an extremely crowded leaderboard. Sunday's round felt a lot like Saturday's round for Smalley in that he struggled out of the gate, but fought back in a big way on the back-nine. Unfortunately for Smalley, on Sunday Aaron Rai just played unbelievable golf and won at Aronimink by three strokes. Smalley made an eagle on the par-5 16th and a birdie on the par-4 18th to secure the second place finish, and lock up a spot for The Masters next year. He has still never won an OWGR sanctioned tournament in his career, but this week will give him a lot of great experience as Smalley goes forward in his career. The 29-year-old has played some really strong golf this season, and this kind of performance at a major should only give him more confidence. Smalley is not listed in the field for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson next week.
