Leading race for QB2 gig Newbauer is leading the QB2 race in Oklahoma ahead of Bowe Bentley, according to Parker Thune of SoonerScoop.

Impact It's not a secret that John Mateer will be the starting quarterback for the Sooners in 2026, but Newbauer is leading the race for the backup role ahead of Bowe Bentley. Newbauer spent the 2024 season at Mercer, appearing in nine games with the Bears this past fall, throwing for 1,398 yards (101-of-179), 12 touchdowns and four interceptions, and he was the third-string QB for the Sooners in 2025 behind Mateer and Michael Hawkins. He has the edge over Bentley because he has more experience in the college ranks than the true freshman and has one full year working under this offense to his advantage as well.
