Wins QB battle Locklear has been named Missouri State's starting quarterback, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.com.

Impact Locklear has won the Bears' starting quarterback job after transferring over from UTEP. In 2025 with the Miners, the quarterback tossed for 1,418 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 55.5% completion with 396 yards and eight scores on the ground as well. He beats out Henry Belin, who's been dealing with a shoulder injury during fall camp.

Looks like starter without Belin Locklear looked like the Bears' starting quarterback without Henry Belin (shoulder) available in their recent scrimmage, Ryan Collingwood of the Springfield Daily Citizen reports.

Impact Missouri State's fall camp is underway, and during the Tigers' first scrimmage Saturday, Locklear logged their first-team snaps. Before then, it was public knowledge that Locklear and Henry Belin (shoulder) were in a competition to be the Tigers' starting quarterback, and it looks like that remains the case. It is also worth noting that Belin was limited in the scrimmage because of shoulder soreness, so while Locklear did show much of what he could do, their QB competition is still very much alive going into Week 1.

Impact Missouri State competed against Locklear during Week 12. The dual-threat quarterback logged 14 completed passes, 125 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns then. Ideally for the Bears, their 2026 season includes more of said Locklear. During 2025, he recorded 117 completed passes, 1,418 passing yards and a 13-11 TD-INT ratio. Locklear also logged eight rushing touchdowns, so 21 total last year.

It was a rocky season for the redshirt junior in his second lap around the track at UTEP, but now, he'll look for another program with one year of eligibility remaining.

Impact Imagine playing in a college football game, throwing four touchdowns, but still hurting your TD-to-INT ratio. It's understandable why the UTEP staff tried to move away from Locklear this offseason. The problem was it took a shot on Malachi Nelson, now locked in as an all-time recruiting bust. It's easy to assume the Miners will try to replace Locklear again this offseason.

Impact Locklear isn't the best passer, though he is better than Malachi Nelson, but he does bring a dynamic to the offense that helps it move. In what amounts to essential six games worth of action Nelson has rushed for 401 yards and eight touchdowns.

Rushes for two TDs Locklear went 14-for-29 for 125 yards against Missouri State on Saturday. He also ran 16 times for 56 yards and two touchdowns.

Impact It's clear to see what Locklear brings to the UTEP offense over Malachi Nelson (other than the fact Nelson is bad at football). He's not the best passer, but over his last five games Locklear has rushed 77 times for 321 yards and seven scores.

Impact In this game you can see why Locklear took the QB job back, but also why UTEP wanted to look for another option. This is his second game with multiple passing and rushing scores. He's also completed 57.5 percent of his passes on the season with six turnovers in his last five games.

Impact The Miners really turned the offense over to Locklear in this one. While sacks count as rushing stats for quarterbacks, Locklear was sacked three times, which means he ran the ball 20 times. Of course, he didn't necessarily run the ball well, and he completed under half of his pass attempts.

Totals four TDs Locklear went 21-for-26 for 236 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception against Sam Houston on Wednesday. He also ran 13 times for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

Impact This may make you wonder why it took so long for the UTEP staff to turn from Malachi Nelson back to Locklear. However, a grain of salt or two is necessary. It appears that Sam Houston is the worst FBS team this season, so Locklear really just took care of business as opposed to impressing.

Impact Though Locklear made his first start of the season against Liberty on Wednesday, the game turned out to be one he will likely want to forget. The 5-foot-11 quarterback struggled to get things going against the Flames, totaling just 90 yards through the air while throwing a pair on interceptions without a touchdown. He did manage to find the end zone on the ground, however, crossing the goal line on a 13-yard scamper in the fourth quarter to bring UTEP to within 11. Locklear looks set to continue to compete with fellow signal caller Malachi Nelson for the starting job, with his next opportunity coming against Sam Houston State next Wednesday.
