Jones grabs 11-yard score in OT to give Middle Tennessee 31-24 win over New Mexico State

AJ Jones caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Roman Gagliano in the first overtime to send Middle Tennesee over New Mexico State 31-24 in the final game of the season for both tea...
NOVEMBER 30 • Associated Press
One wild final start Awad went 22-for-51 for 340 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception against UTEP on Saturday. He also ran 18 times for 24 yards and lost a fumble.
Impact How do you end up with a 28.0 QBR in a game where you throw for over 300 yards with three touchdowns? Well, by being wildly inefficient and turning the ball over twice. Awad was a true sophomore, though, and he had never played a down of college ball before this season. He'll have a shot to start next year.
DECEMBER 1, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Throws for 221 yards Awad went 12-for-16 for 221 yards and ran nine times for 22 yards against MTSU on Saturday.
Impact Awad stayed out of the way, hit a few big passes, and was efficient against a bad MTSU defense. That allowed NMSU to get a win, but Awad doesn't really have upside as a starter.
NOVEMBER 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Throws TD, loses gig again Awad went 11-for-22 for 155 yards and a touchdown against La Tech on Tuesday. He also ran four times for 23 yards.
Impact Santino Marucci had replaced the struggling Awad, but he struggled even more, earning Awad another shot. The NMSU staff evidently did not want to have much patience with a quarterback who has completed 43.0 percent of his passes and averaged 5.6 yards per attempt. Brandon Nunez, who was buried down the depth chart, not only saw action, but led the Aggies to a win. There's a good chance Nunez gets his first start in NMSU's next game against FIU.
OCTOBER 16, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Gets back on the field Awad went 9-for-16 for 120 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against JSU on Wednesday. He also ran five times for 21 yards.
Impact Awad was the starting quarterback for NMSU when the season started, but he struggled and Santino Marucci took over. Marucci wasn't any better, though, so when this game became a blowout, Awad got back in the action. He outperformed Marucci in this game, and so this QB situation seems back up in the air.
OCTOBER 9, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Not starting QB during loss Awad was not the Aggies' starting quarterback for their 48-0 loss Saturday at Fresno State.
Impact Santino Marucci was the Aggies' starting quarterback Saturday. But considering they failed to log any points then, perhaps Awad could be their primary QB again relatively soon.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Another poor performance Awad went 6-for-15 for 48 yards and an interception against Fresno State on Saturday. He also ran seven times for 25 yards.
Impact Simply put, completing 37.0 percent of your passes won't cut it, especially when you've also averaged 0.8 yards per rush. It's not surprising that Deuce Hogan got a chance to play in this one. The problem is that he was even worse than Awad.
SEPTEMBER 15, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Totals three TDs, but struggles Awad went 9-for-22 for 158 yards and two touchdowns against Liberty on Saturday. He also ran for a touchdown.
Impact Three touchdowns is good! Here are a few things that are not good. One, completing 40.9 percent of your passes. Two, totaling minus-20 yards on the ground. Three, losing a fumble. Awad was a disaster in NMSU's opener, so don't get too enthusiastic about three scores.
SEPTEMBER 8, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles as starter Awad went 5-for-17 for 37 yards and an interception and ran seven times for 14 yards against SE Missouri on Saturday.
Impact Jerry Kill is gone, and Diego Pavia has moved on. It's maybe a good time to remember how bad NMSU was for, oh, decades before Kill arrived. Awad, a JUCO transfer, was disastrous in this one, but the other options are not exactly exciting.
SEPTEMBER 1, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Gets starting nod Awad will begin the season as New Mexico State's starting quarterback according to head coach Tony Sanchez, Nick Coppola of Las Cruces Sun News reports.
Impact The Golden West College (JUCO) transfer enters his second collegiate season and will be the starter for the Aggies. Awad has much to prove in his first season as a Division I athlete, but he'll begin the season under center over Wake Forest transfer quarterback Santino Marucci.
