Loses QB battle Murphy will not be Oregon State's starting quarterback to begin the 2026 season, Pete Thamel of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Murphy was in the running for the QB1 role ahead of the season, but he'll ultimately cede starting duties to Mercer transfer Braden Atkinson. The returning Beaver lost the starting gig for Oregon State during last campaign after struggling with efficiency, but his knowledge of the role will still make him a quality backup throughout the year.

Still competing for QB1 role Murphy is currently working alongside fellow quaterbacks Braden Atkinson and Brady Jones for the starting quarterback job in fall camp, per Angie Machado of 247Sports.com.

Impact Murphy had an impressive spring camp and was noted as the most promising quarterback in the Beavers' room, though he remains locked in a three-way battle for the starting job. The trio of signal-callers are currently splitting reps in practice as fall camp progresses. While Murphy started games for Oregon State last year, his efficiency fluctuated under a struggling offense, which resulted in him getting benched. There is still a good amount time remaining in camp for him to build on his strong spring and reclaim the starting role,

Impact Murphy reportedly looks like the most promising quarterback in the Beavers' room, and that's not much of a surprise. The gunslinger lost his starting gig in Corvallis last fall, but he appears to have a leg up in the quarterback battle between himself, Braden Atkinson and Brady Jones. He looks primed to open the season as Oregon State's starter once again.

The Beavers do not play until Nov. 29 against Washington State. Starting after all vs. Wazzu Murphy is getting the start after all despite not looking like the QB1 in warmups, per Greg Woods of The Spokane Spokesman-Review.

Impact Murphy looked like Oregon State's QB2 in warmups, but per a video board announcement, it appears the quarterback will indeed hold down the starting job after he was benched in the Beavers' last game, a 45-13 win over FCS Lafayette. Gabarri Johnson will ride the bench, but Murphy's leash looks short here.

Impact Murphy has completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,650 yards and a 9:8 TD:INT while quarterbacking the Beavers to an 0-7 record. The team turned to Gabarri Johnson in an expanded role in Week 7, with Johnson attempting 12 passes to Murphy's 30. It's unclear how snaps will be divvied up going forward, but it looks like a two-quarterback system could be the norm moving forward.
