Questionable for Week 4
Barnes (lower leg) is questionable for Saturday's game against SMU, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.
Impact
During the TCU team's previous game, Week 3 against Abilene Christian, Barnes suffered a lower-leg injury, limiting him to 10 carries then. Because of it, he recently did not practice. Previously probable, Barnes' injury status is downgraded to questionable.

Not seen practicing Tuesday
Barnes (leg) was not seen practicing for TCU on Tuesday, Steven Johnson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact
Even though Barnes may not be expected to miss any time because of his current leg injury, him participating in a TCU practice would have been re-assuring, but that kind of news was not the case Tuesday. Perhaps the Frogs' head coach Sonny Dykes may provide an update on Barnes later, but his status is turning questionable going into Week 4 against SMU.

Not expected to miss time
TCU's head coach Sonny Dykes said he expects Barnes (leg) not to miss any time, Steven Johnson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact
According to Jamie Plunkett of 247Sports.com, Barnes ended up hobbling after taking accidental contact via a helmet to the back of his leg. He did not return to the game, but Johnson's update on Dykes assures that the injured running back will be good to go for Week 4. Still, Barnes enters Saturday's SMU-TCU matchup with a probable status.

Huge TD run in third quarter
Barnes recorded 11 rushes for 113 yards and one touchdown and caught all three targets for 21 yards during Monday's 48-14 win versus North Carolina.
Impact
Barnes opened up the second half with a 75-yard touchdown run which blew the game open for the Horned Frogs. It was a successful debut for the transfer from UTSA as TCU appears to be a legitimate contender in the Big 12 this year. Barnes led the way for the team with 11 carries on a night where the run-gam was heavily featured in the second half. TCU will play Abilene Christian next week.

Earning most of first-team reps
Barnes took the majority of the first-team reps during Sunday's scrimmage, according to Steven Johnson of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Impact
Barnes had a number of impressive plays during Sunday's scrimmage, and the fact that he took most of the first-team reps suggests that he's likely to be a constant fixture out of the Horned Frogs' backfield. If the season were to start in the coming days, he'd probably be the starter at running back. Barnes, a senior, logged 147 carries for 715 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and six touchdowns in his 11 games for UTSA in 2024.

Taking first reps
Barnes took the first reps at running back Sunday, per Jeremy Clark of 247Sports.com.
Impact
Barnes continues to make his case for a lead role in the backfield, taking the first reps during Sunday's team period and standing out with his early-camp performance. While the running back competition remains wide open, Barnes has been consistently impressive. Still, with Trent Battle, Nate Palmer, and Jon Denman each showcasing strong runs, the position could be headed toward a committee approach.

Signs with TCU
Barnes has signed with TCU, Pete Nakos of On3 reports.
Impact
Barnes signing with TCU suggests he will sit out UTSA's upcoming bowl to enroll at Texas Christian in the near future. Even though TCU's running back room is filled with more than several options who have not gone portaling, its 2024 season ended without a clear-cut No. 1. Barnes' 2023 campaign confirms he has what it takes to be the Frogs' primary RB, having been such for UTSA then. The redshirt junior logged 147 carries for 715 yards (4.9 averaged per carry) and six touchdowns in his 11 games that year.

Looking for next opportunity
Barnes will enter the transfer portal, he announced via his personal X account.
Impact
Barnes saw his involvement within the Roadrunners' offense dip in 2024, going from 147 carries the year prior to 78 this fall. The tailback was also simply less effective, seeing his yards-per-carry dip to 2.8. He'll have one final season of eligibility remaining.

Productive versus Houston Christian
Barnes had 12 rushes for 64 yards and one touchdown and caught 0 of 1 targets for zero yards during Saturday's 45-7 victory versus Houston Christian.
Impact
Barnes had his first productive game of the season Saturday as he rushed for over 60 yards and scored his first touchdown of the season. He could have done a lot more too, but he was one of four running backs to receive over six carries due to the blowout. He appears to be the lead back in the Roadrunners' committee, and should be able to produce more consistently versus weaker defenses in conference play.

Rough start to season
Barnes recorded four rushes for 22 yards and gathered in their only target for 13 yards during Saturday's 28-16 win versus Kennesaw State.
Impact
While Barnes started Saturday's opener, he received fewer carries than both Robert Henry and Rocko Griffin and lost a fumble in the second quarter. It was a rough start to the campaign for him coming off back-to-back productive seasons with the Roadrunners. Although he is still presumably the starter, both Robert Henry and Rocko Griffin are likely to cut into his workload which hurts his value moving forward.

Plays three snaps in win
Barnes played three snaps and did not record a carry in Friday's 49-21 win over USF.
Impact
Barnes seemed good to go ahead of Friday's contest but only ended up playing three snaps. He also missed last week's game as a precaution. His limited usage could have been another precaution, as the Roadrunners' biggest game of the season -- Friday at Tulane with a chance to go to the AAC Championship Game -- is just around the corner.

Finally back on track
Barnes compiled 16 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 37-29 win versus North Texas.
Impact
After six consecutive games without 100 yards rushing, Barnes broke out for a season-high 129 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. It was a much-needed performance for him as he has had a much quieter season than was expected for him. Still, four different Roadrunners had at least 10 carries Saturday and while Barnes led the way, so much of the work in the running game is not going to him.

Shut down in win
Barnes notched seven rushes for eight yards and hauled in their only target for 14 yards during Saturday's 41-27 win over East Carolina.
Impact
Barnes recorded his fewest carries and yards in a game since Week 6 last season where he played 16 snaps and did not receive a single carry. No one on the team had a particularly great day on the ground, besides Rocko Griffin who had 80 yards on five carries, 69 of which came on one run. Still, five different Roadrunners received four or more carries, and the backfield is turning much more into a committee than it was last season. Barnes has not run for over 100 yards since Week 2, however his next three matchups are all very favorable.

Slower day in win
Barnes accrued 10 carries for 56 yards and caught three passes for 10 yards during Saturday's 36-10 victory versus Florida Atlantic.
Impact
Barnes took a back seat in Saturday's win with Robert Henry and Rocko Griffin both outshining him. All three backs had at least 10 carries for at least 50 yards, but Barnes was the only one without a touchdown. It does not appear that he is at any significant risk of losing his starting job, but it's clear that both Henry and Griffin are rotating in which limits Barnes' overall workload.
