Hokies 'working together for a common goal' after emotional week BLACKSBURG — There was a moment early Tuesday afternoon when Benji Gosnell could have easily broken down and let his emotions take over.

Four targets in opener Gosnell posted one reception (on four targets) for zero yards during Sunday's 24-11 loss against South Carolina.

Impact Gosnell was the only Virginia Tech tight end to be targeted in the loss, but he caught just one of those targets for no gain. Gosnell logged 32 catches for 341 yards and two scores last season with the Hokies, and he caught multiple passes in nine of 13 appearances.

Productive outing in win Gosnell caught 5 of 6 targets for 59 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 21-6 victory over Georgia Tech.

Impact Gosnell had his most yards since the opener, and scored his second touchdown of the season. The Hokies' passing attack is somewhat tame with Kyron Drones at quarterback, so don't expect Gosnell to replicate these numbers all that frequently.

Impact Gosnell's 61 yards were a good start to his season, but even more promising is the fact that quarterback Kyron Drones looked his way seven times. That seems to indicate Gosnell has a big year as a security blanket for his quarterback on the horizon. Gosnell is also the undisputed top tight end for the Hokies, which helps matters even more.

Listed as Week 1 starter Gosnell is listed as the starter on Virginia Tech's initial depth chart of the 2024 season, Damien Sordelett of The Roanoke Times reports.

Impact Gosnell battled injuries this offseason, and missed a chunk of time in fall camp. However, he appears to have fully recovered from his knee injury and is ready to roll with the starters in Week 1. Last season with the Hokies, Gosnell posted 12 catches for 137 yards and one touchdown.

Impact Gosnell previously sat out the Virginia Tech spring game with a knee injury but appears to have made a full recovery. The 6-foot-5 tight end caught 12 passes for 137 yards and a score for the Hokies in 2023 and will hope to see an expanded role within the offense in 2024.
