Leaving Minnesota Thompson has entered the NCAA transfer portal, VerbalCommits.com reports.

Impact Thompson appeared in 20 games this season (eight starts), logging 2.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists on 11 minutes per game. The 7-foot sophomore will look to take over a larger role with a new program next season.

That was what happened during November, at a time when Thompson was favored over Josh Ola-Joseph and played in place of an injured Jamison Battle.

Impact The Gophers were incredibly short-handed Saturday, especially in the frontcourt, as five players were out -- three of which were starters. That list included starting center Eric Curry and starting power forward Jamison Battle, who were both dealing with undisclosed injuries. That left a heavy dose of minutes to Thompson, a 6-11 freshman who had previously registered a season-high of 11 minutes. Thompson had hardly been a rotation player, even in non-conference play, but he's suddenly thrusted into a significant role due to the injury situation in what was already a thin position group. It's about to get a lot tougher for the roster's only true center, however, as matchups against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Purdue await.
