Added to transfer portal
Carmody was added to the NCAA's transfer portal Monday, VerbalCommits.com reports.
Impact
Wanting to play more collegiate basketball as a graduate student, Carmody will transfer away from Notre Dame. He logged 18 minutes across his six games (so 3.0 MPG) during the Fighting Irish's latest season.

Makes appearance
Carmody (kneecap) appeared towards the end of Wednesday's 82-70 win over Southern Indiana.
Impact
Carmody played just one minute, making his first appearance for the Fighting Irish since sustaining a fractured kneecap over one year ago. Though he made an appearance, it is unclear how long he will remain playing a limited role. It is not likely that he will assume a role in the rotation very soon.

Isn't playing Thursday
Carmody (kneecap) won't play Thursday night against Radford, Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune reports.
Impact
Carmody missed Notre Dame's exhibition against Xavier (LA) on Nov. 2 due to a kneecap injury, and he'll now miss the team's season opener versus Radford while tending to the same issue.

DNP across exhibition
Carmody (kneecap) did not play during Notre Dame's exhibition win Wednesday versus Xavier [LA].
Impact
Perhaps fortunately for Carmody, the Fighting Irish will play their season opener a few days after most teams' campaigns begin Monday. Their first game is currently scheduled Nov. 10 versus Radford.

Will suit up, won't play Saturday
Carmody (kneecap) will suit up for Saturday's contest against Pittsburgh, but he won't play as he hasn't been cleared for basketball activities.
Impact
Carmody has already been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, so this appears to be a sign of good faith from the program to allow the sophomore to experience suiting up with his teammates for the final game of the regular season. Carmody hasn't seen game action since 2019 due to an ACL injury followed by a fractured kneecap.

Outlook not optimistic
According to Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune, there's "zero chance" Carmody suits up for Notre Dame this season.
Impact
This is quite a statement regarding a player who was at one point expected to be cleared by Oct. 1, so it appears there may have been some type of setback for the veteran guard. Carmody has a long history with knee injuries, as he suffered a torn ACL in December of 2019 before fracturing his kneecap a little more than nine months afterwards. Noie seems to think Carmody recently underwent a knee scope as well, though that may just be speculation on his part. Either way, it seems like Carmody can safely be left on the waiver wire in even the deepest of formats. In the meantime, it appears Notre Dame will play a starting backcourt of Prentiss Hubb, Cormac Ryan and Dane Goodwin, with Trey Wertz in line to be the first off the bench.

Likely to be shut down
Coach Mike Brey said he believes Carmody (kneecap) is better off not competing in any five-on-fives this season, Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune reports.
Impact
After some internal discussions, Brey and the team doctors must have decided it was better to shut Carmody down for the season instead of trying to get him back later this year. The junior will get a full summer to get back to 100 percent before trying to return to the rotation in the 2021-22 campaign for the Irish.

Hoping for January return
Carmody (knee) hopes to return to five-on-five action in practice by mid-January according to coach Mike Brey, Tim Prister of 247 Sports reports.
Impact
Brey also commented on how Carmody "got heavy" after suffering the kneecap fracture in September but has since lost 20 pounds due to a change in diet. Notre Dame runs a pretty tight rotation that could use a hand from the oft-injured Carmody, but given Brey's recent comments, a best-case scenario for his return would be late-January.

Sidelined after fracturing kneecap
Carmody recently suffered a fractured kneecap and is slated to undergo surgery Tuesday, Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune reports.
Impact
The specifics regarding how and when Carmody picked up the injury aren't known, but he's expected to be sidelined until the second half of December following surgery, which typically carries a two-month recovery timeline. The rising junior has been hit hard by the injury bug during his time at Notre Dame, appearing in a combined 16 games between his first two seasons with the program while missing time with a torn ACL, a shoulder contusion, a concussion and a torn labrum in his shoulder. After suffering the ACL tear in his left knee last December, Carmody was expected to be ready to go for the start of the 2020-21 and make a push for a spot in the backcourt rotation, but the fractured kneecap will thwart those plans.
