High-volume bench role in return
Etienne (knee) notched two points (1-9 FG), seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals across 15 minutes during Monday's 76-50 win over Sacramento State.
Impact
It was far from an efficient showing for Etienne, though he did get a solid volume of shots up and played the second-most minutes of any UCLA reserve. The 6-10 center spent much of the offseason recovering from a knee injury but now appears to be fully cleared and ready to provide post depth. One question is whether this type of minutes total will continue when five-star freshman center Adem Bona -- who sat Monday with an undisclosed injury -- returns to the court.

Practicing ahead of season opener
UCLA coach Mick Cronin said that Etienne (knee) was a participant in "live practice" Monday, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
Impact
Etienne suffered a season-ending torn ACL last November, and he appears to be progressing well heading into next Monday's season opener against Sacramento State. The 6-foot-10 big man averaged 2.6 points and 2.8 rebounds in 11.4 minutes per game over 13 contests in the 2020-21 season. Expect Etienne to play a reserve role in the Bruins' frontcourt when healthy.

Potentially out for season
Head coach Mick Cronin said that Etienne suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury, Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact
There is some additional testing that the team still needs to do before they can consider it official that Etienne is out for the season. Etienne was not expected to take on a significant role this season, but if UCLA has any other frontcourt injuries their depth may be challenged.

No timetable for return from injury
Head coach Mick Cronin said that Etienne suffered an injury and has no timetable for return, Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Impact
Coach Cronin didn't give us much to work with here, but it sounds like it may be a stretch to expect Etienne to play in the season-opener next week. This injury will test the depth of the UCLA frontcourt early in the season.

Impact
Etienne will enter the starting five in place of Johnny Juzang after he was ruled as a game-time decision because he tweaked his ankle in Friday's practice. Logs 27 minutes in UCLA debut
Etienne had eight points (4-5 FG, 0-2 FT), five rebounds, two blocks and a steal across 27 minutes off the bench in Saturday's 66-48 loss to USC.
Impact
The UCLA frontcourt has been devastated by injuries of late, as pro prospect Chris Smith is out for the year with a torn ACL, while Jalen Hill (personal) and Cody Riley (ankle) were also unavailable for this contest. While it was Kenneth Nwuba who got the start, Etienne was the more effective fantasy player in what was his season debut for the Bruins. The 19-year-old is an early enrollee with the Bruins after the pandemic cancelled his prep season in New Hampshire, and with the NCAA not counting this season for eligibility purposes, UCLA has nothing to lose by getting him in the mix early. According to the report, Etienne could even draw the start Thursday against Washington if Riley is again unable to go, but it seems like minutes will be there for him regardless of Riley's health.
