Johnathan Lawson - College Basketball News & Rumors | FOX Sports

Set to redshirt Head coach Penny Hardaway confirmed Tuesday that Lawson will redshirt this season, Jason Munz of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

Impact Lawson is entering his freshman season with the Tigers as a top-100 recruit in the Class of 2021. Despite being an appealing prospect, there just isn't much room for Lawson to play this year on a very talented Memphis squad. The 6-6 forward will continue to develop his game with the hopes of playing a role next season.

Ready to return Lawson (undisclosed) is healthy and will return to action in Sunday's exhibition versus Lane College, Jason Munz of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

Impact Lawson missed his first chance to suit up for the Tigers in last week's exhibition but appears to be good to go Sunday with more than a week remaining before the regular season kicks off. While he's not quite the prospect that star freshman Emoni Bates is, Lawson is a top-100 recruit in his own right and could carve out a role in the rotation.

Sits out exhibition Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway said Lawson was held out of Sunday's 105-57 exhibition win over LeMoyne-Owen, Steven Johnson of The Daily Memphian reports.

Impact Hardaway didn't go into detail regarding why Lawson and Landers Nolley didn't play Sunday, but Johnson suggests the players' absences could have been disciplinary-related. Regardless, Lawson should have another chance to play in an exhibition Oct. 31 versus Lane College before Memphis opens its regular season Nov. 9 versus Tennessee Tech.
