Impact Shumate had a five-game scoring low with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line, but his teammates picked him up, with 18 coming from point guard Quadir Copeland and Javohn Garcia and DJ Richards putting in 10 apiece. Shumate's counting stats are down in 2024-25, as his scoring (10.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg are four-year lows. At least some of that is due to the addition of Lafayette transfer Joe Charles, who is averaging 8.7 points and 7.1 rebounds down low. Shumate's efficiency is up a bit, however, as he's shooting a career-best 61.9 percent from the field.

Impact Shumate's scoring has dropped a bit from last season's 15.1 ppg mark, but there's still time to recover, and more importantly, he's helping the team in other ways. He now has four consecutive double-doubles, averaging 13.8 points and 11.3 rebounds over that span. As a result, McNeese State now has a 13-1 conference record and a three-game lead atop the Southland standings with four games to go. It's not outlandish to say that even if the Cowboys falter, they might have an outside chance at an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

Impact Shumate was a valued player, especially from Feb. 23 to March 7. He averaged 21.8 points and 12.3 rebounds across his last six games during which McNeese State had him. But after the 2022-23 Cowboys lost more than 66.7 percent of their 34 matchups, Shumate is expected to enroll in a school whose basketball program has better upside.
