GAME LOG

Will not play Tuesday Curbelo was seen in street clothes and will not play Tuesday against Nebraska,Scott Richey of The Champaign News-Gazette reports.
Impact After suffering a minor setback recently, Curbelo was seen in street clothes during Tuesday's warmups. Curbelo is set to miss his tenth straight game for the Illini, having last played on Nov 23. His next chance to return is Friday against Michigan.
JANUARY 11, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Has minor setback Coach Brad Underwood said that Curbelo (neck) underwent a minor setback recently, Jeremy Werner of 247Sports reports.
Impact Coach Underwood indicated that Curbelo was unlikely to be a full participant in practice this week. That news indicates that he likely will not suit up on Tuesday against Nebraska. Curbelo has not played in a game in over a month's time now.
JANUARY 10, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
No timetable for return Illinois head coach Brad Underwood told Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports on Tuesday that Curbelo (neck) remains without a timetable for return.
Impact Underwood also acknowledged that Curbelo is "getting better" and that "he is progressing and working on his conditioning." All this adds up to Curbelo most likely sitting out Tuesday against Minnesota, and it does little to ease the minds of fantasy managers who had been counting on major scoring and assist contributions from the third-year guard. Until further notice, upperclassmen Trent Frazier will be tasked with most of the ball-handling, while Alfonso Plummer will continue to get extra shots up.
JANUARY 4, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Not expected to play Curbelo (neck) is not expected to play Tuesday against Minnesota, Jeremy Werner of 247Sports reports.
Impact Curbelo is dealing with a neck injury that dates back to over a month now. The recovery process has been a lengthier one that originally thought and it's unclear when he will be healthy enough to return to the lineup.
JANUARY 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Out again Saturday Curbelo (neck) remains out Saturday versus St. Francis, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
Impact Given that Curbelo hadn't practiced all week, it seemed the logical outcome was another absence from the budding sophomore. That is indeed the case, making his next opportunity to return Wednesday at Missouri.
DECEMBER 18, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Did not practice all week Curbelo (neck) did not practice this week, Joey Wagner of 247Sports reports.
Impact The electrifying playmaker has missed Illinois' last five appearances and is looking likely to miss his sixth in a row after not participating in practice this week. Curbelo's next chance to return is seeming to be Wednesday against Missouri.
DECEMBER 17, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Remains out Curbelo (neck) is feeling better but remains out for Saturday's game against Arizona, Scott Richey of The Champaign News-Gazette reports.
Impact Curbelo has missed four straight games with a neck injury and will wind up missing at least one more. The fact that he's trending in the right direction is certainly a positive, however, and he'll get a full extra week to rest before Illinois' next game, which comes Dec. 18 against St. Francis (PA).
DECEMBER 10, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Won't play Monday Curbelo (neck) won't play Monday against Iowa, Scott Richey of The Champaign News-Gazette reports.
Impact Curbelo will be sidelined for a fourth consecutive game as he continues to deal with neck soreness that stems from a concussion that kept him out for the season opener. Alfonso Plummer will likely take on an increased role for Illinois once again Monday.
DECEMBER 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Still in recovery process Coach Brad Underwood indicated Thursday that Curbelo's (neck) recovery "is a process and he's out," Joey Wagner of 247Sports reports.
Impact It doesn't sound like Curbelo is particularly close to rejoining the action, but it's best to rule him out only for Friday's game against Rutgers until more information surfaces regarding his status moving forward. The sophomore guard has appeared in four games for the Illini this season, averaging 9.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds over 22.0 minutes per game.
DECEMBER 2, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Out Monday Curbelo (neck) won't play in Monday's game against Notre Dame, Scott Richey of The Champaign News-Gazette reports.
Impact As expected, Curbelo won't be able to give it a go due to a neck injury during the Illini's Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchup. As a result, Alfonso Plummer will likely garner another start and see an increased role versus the Irish. Curbelo's next opportunity to return to the floor looms Friday against Rutgers.
NOVEMBER 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Doubtful for Monday Illinois head coach Brad Underwood said Curbelo (neck) is "highly unlikely" to play Monday against Notre Dame, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
Impact The sophomore point guard no longer appears to be dealing with any concussion symptoms after sitting out Illinois' season opener with the head injury, but he's still contending with some residual neck discomfort following his most recent appearance Nov. 23 versus Kansas State. Barring dramatic improvement leading up to the 9 p.m. ET opening tip, Curbelo will be sidelined for a second straight game.
NOVEMBER 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Won't play Friday Curbelo (undisclosed) is in street clothes ahead of Friday's game against Texas Rio Grande Valley, Jeremy Werner of 247Sports reports.
Impact Curbelo missed the season opener while recovering from a concussion but returned to play in the next four games. Reports from earlier this week indicated that he was still working through post-concussion symptoms, particularly neck discomfort, so that seems to be the reason for his absence Friday.
NOVEMBER 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Concussion symptoms in play Curbelo had six points (2-5 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 1-1 FT), seven assists and three rebounds across 20 minutes in Tuesday's 72-64 victory over Kansas State.
Impact Curbelo still appears to be having symptoms from the concussion that held him out of the season opener, as he missed time on multiple occasions to speak with trainers on the sideline and receive treatment. After the game, coach Brad Underwood noted that Curbelo is still fighting "head trauma" and "concussion stuff." While that sounds quite serious and could lead to lower minutes totals ahead, it has yet to force Curbelo to miss any games entirely since the opener. The numbers have still been solid, however, as the second-year guard is posting 9.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds across 22.0 minutes. Those per-minute numbers should translate to a big increase in counting stats once he takes on a full workload, but until then, Alfonso Plummer -- who scored 21 points off the bench Tuesday -- should continue to see extra run.
NOVEMBER 24, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Well-rounded contributor in win Curbelo supplied eight points (3-8 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 2-4 FT), four rebounds, seven assists and two steals over 19 minutes during Friday's 92-53 victory over Arkansas State.
Impact Curbelo wasn't active for Tuesday's opener due to a concussion, but he made his first collegiate start in his season debut Friday. The sophomore should remain in the starting five to begin the year, and he got off to a strong start by leading the team in assists against Arkansas State.
NOVEMBER 13, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Dressed Friday Curbelo (concussion) is dressed for Friday's game against Arkansas State, Scott Richey of The Champaign News-Gazette reports.
Impact Scott sat out Tuesday's opener due to a concussion. Him being dressed prior to Friday's game indicates he has cleared protocols and should be set to make his season debut.
NOVEMBER 12, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Status for Friday undecided Curbelo's (concussion) status for Friday's game against Arkansas State has yet to be determined, Joey Wagner of 247Sports reports.
Impact Curbelo was unable to suit up in Tuesday's opener after suffering a concussion and it appears he hasn't been cleared yet to return Friday. Official word on his status should surface ahead of the opening tip, with Alfonso Plummer likely seeing most of the game on the ball if he can't go.
NOVEMBER 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Won't play Tuesday Curbelo is out for Tuesday's game against Jackson State due to a concussion, Derek Piper of the Illini Inquirer reports.
Impact This is the first we've heard of Curbelo's concussion, as the news comes just under an hour before tipoff. With Trent Frazier (shoulder) out as well, expected Alfonso Plummer and Luke Goode to possibly see an increase in minutes. Curbelo should be considered day-to-day leading up to the team's next contest Friday against Arkansas State.
NOVEMBER 9, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
But first, joy: How Illinois' Andre Curbelo sees life and basketball "I don’t think anybody plays so flashy anymore like that. I’ve been doing it for such a long time that I just feel that’s my game."
NOVEMBER 4, 2021 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Turnover-heavy exhibition Curbelo had 14 points (5-10 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 4-7 FT) and 12 assists in 33 minutes before fouling out of Friday's 94-79 exhibition victory over Indiana (PA).
Impact It was usage typical of what to expect from Curbelo this season, though provided it's not a typo, he did commit 10 turnovers in the contest against a DII opponent. Still, it was a low-stakes opportunity for Curbelo to shake off some rust, with Illinois' next official game action set for the season opener against Jackson State on Nov. 9.

College basketball 2021-22: 36 takeaways heading into a new (normal) season
Business as usual in exhibition Curbelo had 11 points (5-10 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 0-1 FT), five assists, three rebounds, three steals and two block across 20 minutes in Saturday's 101-34 exhibition victory over St. Franci...
Impact With Ayo Dosunmu off to the professional ranks, the ball is in Curbelo's hands now as the primary point guard for the Illini. College basketball fans have already seen what Curbelo can do when the ball-dominant Dosunmu isn't in the lineup, as Curbelo averaged 14.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists during a three-game stretch without him last season. Curbelo went on to win Sixth Man of the Year honors in the Big Ten conference, but the ceiling is clearly much higher in 2021-22. Also helping his case is the somewhat surprising return of Wooden Award candidate Kofi Cockburn, who should help Curbelo's assist totals simply by being his dominant self around the basket. There are few Big Ten players with a similar mix of floor and ceiling from a fantasy perspective, but Curbelo is the type of player deserving of fantasy attention even on the national radar.
