News: Cooks (stomach) returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday, ESPN reports.
Impact: Cooks missed the Saints' past three days of practice due to a stomach virus. While the rookie is now feeling better, it's still uncertain if he'll suit up for this weekend's third preseason contest.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Brees (oblique) is slated to suit up for Saturday's preseason contest against the Colts, ESPN's Mike Triplett reports.
Impact: The report notes that Brees, who had been slowed by a strained oblique, looked sharp at Wednesday's practice, while suggesting that the Saints' star QB is likely to play for about a half in Saturday's game, the team's third preseason tilt.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Byrd (back) is expected to make his Saints' preseason debut Saturday against the Colts, ESPN reports.
Impact: Byrd has been practicing on a limited basis since being activated from New Orleans' PUP list three weeks ago, but Tuesday marked the safety's first full-contact action since undergoing back surgery in May. With minimal restrictions left, the Saints are expected to start Byrd in Saturday's exhibition outing, although his playing time will probably be closely monitored. Nonetheless, it'll be good for Byrd to gain game experience in defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's scheme before the regular season kicks off, as Byrd and rising second-year player Kenny Vacarro figure to comprise one of the league's premier safety tandems.

News: Robinson gained 11 yards on four carries and caught three passes for only two yards in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: There was little room to run for Robinson in this one, but he appears locked in to split carries with Mark Ingram during the season, as the Saints love his ability to break tackles. Though Pierre Thomas is expected to be the featured back in the passing game, Robinson has also shown a decent pair of hands that could garner him some additional opportunities in the passing game. Robinson remains a sleeper option in fantasy, with plenty of upside in the Saints' explosive offense should the oft-injured Ingram succumb to malady once again this year.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cadet gained 16 yards on five carries and caught two passes for 22 yards in Friday's preseason game against the Titans. He also returned one kickoff for 26 yards.
Impact: Cadet appears locked in as the Saints' fourth running back. While he's unlikely to see much action on the ground - Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson are expected to carry much of that workload - he could see some opportunities as a third-down back when Pierre Thomas needs a breather. Still, absent injury, he doesn't project to be a significant fantasy contributor in standard leagues. Cadet does, however, appear to be the most likely candidate to fill the departed Darren Sproles' role as the Saints' primary kick returner, which could give him some sneaky value in leagues that reward return yardage.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Galette made two tackles and a sack in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: Galette has drawn rave reviews in training camp and appears primed to build off his breakout campaign in 2013, in which he managed an impressive 12 sacks -- good for sixth in the league -- as an outside linebacker in the Saints' 3-4 defense. While he made only 40 tackles last season, a low total for a linebacker in IDP leagues, he's an elite pass rusher off the edge, making him a boom-or-bust option for owners.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Jordan had a sack and a forced fumble in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: After a breakout campaign in 2013 in which he earned his first Pro Bowl invite, Jordan appears primed for another big season for the Saints. Entering only his fourth NFL season, he should be one of the first defensive linemen off the board in IDP leagues as he attempts to build off his 12.5 sacks last year.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Vaccaro recorded four tackles (all solo), a sack, and a forced fumble in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: Vaccaro, the Saints' first-round pick in 2013, actually forced a second fumble as well, but it was ruled an incomplete pass after a close replay review. After an impressive rookie campaign in which he was technically the third safety, he appears set for a breakout season as he assumes a starting strong safety position with the departures of Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper. With ball-hawk, free-agent signing Jairus Byrd playing free safety behind him, Vaccaro should have free reign to play aggressively near the line of scrimmage, which could result in some gaudy IDP statistics this season.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Jenkins (chest) took part in team drills for the first time all summer Sunday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact: Jenkins, who is projected to split time with Broderick Bunkley at nose tackle in the Saints' 3-4 defense, is a mammoth space eater on the defensive line, but he'll need to prove he has some pass-rushing chops to have value in IDP leagues.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Colston, who missed Friday's preseason game for undisclosed reasons, returned to practice Monday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact: Colston, hampered by foot and knee injuries much of the first half, suffered through arguably his worst season as a pro last year, failing to post 1,000 yards receiving or seven scores for the first time since 2008. Still, he managed 48 grabs for 601 yards and four scores over the final eight games of 2013, showing that his early-season ailments may have been to blame for his relatively low numbers. While it's possible Colston has lost a step as he enters his ninth NFL season, he's been one of the most consistent weapons in fantasy during his career and remains the top wide receiver option in a Drew Brees-led offense, making him a potential value if he slips in drafts.
Sun. Aug 17, 2014 | STATS
News: Brees fully participated in practice Sunday for the first time since straining his left oblique muscle two weeks ago.
Impact: Brees hasn't missed a start due to injury since coming to New Orleans in 2006 and says he plans on playing against Indianapolis on Saturday night in the Saints' third preseason game.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Stills (quad) took part in individual passing drills Sunday, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Stills has been limited by a sore quad this preseason, but it's a good sign that he was able to get some work in Sunday. The Saints figure to take it easy with Stills over the rest of the preseason, but it seems he should be ready to play Week 1. Fantasy owners can expect Stills to start opposite Marques Colston in the Saints' offense, as Stills looks to secure a more featured role following the departures of Darren Sproles and Lance Moore this offseason.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Brees (oblique) participated in full-team drills during Sunday's practice, ESPN's Mike Triplett reports.
Impact: Now that he's evidently ready to put his oblique issue behind him, look for Brees to get in some work in during next Saturday's preseason tilt against the Colts. He remains a top-three quarterback option in nearly all fantasy leagues entering the season.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dimke successfully converted two extra point attempts from the trial, 33-yard distance in Friday's preseason game against the Titans. Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune still projects, however, that Shayne Graham will prevail over Dimke in their competition for the Saints' kicking duties this season.
Impact: While Dimke did not attempt a field goal, Graham, who missed one of the longer extra point tries last week, was perfect on his lone extra point attempt and a 34-yard field goal in Friday's exhibition. Graham likely holds the edge primarily due to his superior experience, including a game-winning kick for New Orleans in last year's playoffs. Neither Dimke nor Graham can afford any slip ups, as the competition continues to last into next week.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Graham successfully converted his lone extra point attempt from the trial, 33-yard distance and he also nailed a 34-yard field goal in Friday's preseason game against the Titans. Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune still projects Graham to prevail in the competition with Derek Dimke for the Saints' kicking duties this season.
Impact: After Graham started last week's game in St. Louis, he ceded the start to Dimke in Friday's exhibition. Graham clanged one of his longer extra point tries off the upright last week, so it was critical he was perfect on Friday. With Dimke also perfect on two extra point attempts of his own (he did not try a field goal), the competition will likely continue into next week.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cooks caught one pass on four targets for 16 yards in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: Cooks has a bright future in the league, but the Saints' second preseason game highlighted why it may be tough to trust Cooks in many fantasy leagues in his rookie season. Even without the team's top two receivers (Marques Colston and Kenny Stills), who both sat this one out, Cooks worked mainly out of the slot. Further, Cooks dropped a likely touchdown on a deep ball, and Jimmy Graham was predictably the target of choice for Saints' quarterbacks, with Pierre Thomas primarily utilized on screens and shorter routes out of the backfield. Facing the typically steep rookie learning curve and with so many options in the Saints' spread-the-wealth attack, it may be difficult to rely on Cooks on a week-to-week basis.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ingram gained 19 yards on five carries and had a 23-yard touchdown reception in the Saints' preseason game against the Titans on Friday.
Impact: Ingram predictably shared much of the first-team workload with Khiry Robinson, but Pierre Thomas did much of the heavy lifting through the air, catching three first-half passes. Expect the Saints the use a similar blueprint during the year, in deploying their three-headed running back committee.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Morgan caught three passes for 108 yards in Friday's preseason game against the Titans. According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Morgan projects as the Saints' sixth wide receiver.
Impact: This was exactly the type of performance Morgan needed to ensure his inclusion on the Saints' 53-man roster, as he proved he can once again be an asset as a deep threat with a couple of huge plays down field, including a diving, 53-yard reception. While he will need to work his way up the depth chart in order to have a fantasy impact, Morgan showed two years ago that he can be a play-maker, if given the opportunity, when he led the league with a whopping 37.9 yards per catch.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Thomas caught three passes for 27 yards in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: Thomas, who is expected to work as part of a three-headed backfield with Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson, provided a preview of things to come Friday night. While always a major threat in the passing game, Thomas figures to be even more reception-minded than usual this season. Of course, that's saying a lot, given that he recorded 77 receptions and 147 carries last year. The Saints seemingly want Thomas to get fewer carries this year, but the veteran still figures to work as the third-down back in an offense that no longer has Darren Sproles.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Graham caught five passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns on six targets in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: A recent report said that Graham looks even better than he did last season, an idea that's scary for the defenses he'll have to face in a few weeks. He only supported that notion with his performance Friday night, and he didn't even have Drew Brees around to help. Keep in mind that Graham was bothered by a foot injury for much of 2013, yet still turned in an all-time great season for a tight end. He's now believed to be 100 percent healthy, and also has the security of a long-term contract.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Starting in place of Kenny Stills (quad), Toon caught one pass for six yards on two targets in Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: Toon is unlikely to push Stills for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, and rookie first-round pick Brandin Cooks appears destined for slot duties. That leaves Toon as the likely No. 4 wide receiver, a role that means more in New Orleans than nearly anywhere else. Should he in fact enter the season as the Saints' No. 4 wideout, Toon would be just one injury away from regular playing time in a high-powered offense.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Though he didn't play, Stills (quad) ran on the field before Friday's preseason game against the Titans.
Impact: Marques Colston was sidelined with no explanation, leaving Nick Toon and Robert Meachem to start at wide receiver. While Toon could perhaps push for some playing time, Stills and Colston still figure to be the starting duo come Week 1. The losses of Darren Sproles and Lance Moore will free up some extra targets to go around, but it looks like first-round draft pick Brandin Cooks could account for quite a few of those. Cooks worked out of the slot Friday, and he'll likely do the same once the games count.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: After a fast start to training camp, Butler (undisclosed) has been sidelined for nearly two weeks, including missing Wednesday's final practice in West Virginia, with an undisclosed injury, reports ESPN.com.
Impact: In the Saints' unofficial depth chart released last week in advance of the team's first preseason game, Butler was listed behind both Junior Galette and Keyunta Dawson at one of the starting outside linebacker positions. Butler's shot at a starting spot - and his path of fantasy relevance - is in serious jeopardy, and he may even find himself out of a roster spot if he can't show the Saints he can stay on the field.
Thu. Aug 14, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Lorig (leg) missed practice again on Wednesday, reports ESPN.com. Lorig has been sidelined for nearly two weeks, but the Saints have not offered any details on the severity of his injury.
Impact: Lorig, a five-year veteran, was thought to have a firm grasp on the starting fullback position in his first season with the Saints. While most fullbacks in the league have little fantasy value, the Saints have not shied from featuring their fullback around the goal line on both the ground and through the air. As an apt pass catcher - he had 33 total receptions in Tampa Bay the last two years - Lorig, in theory, would have been a great fit for the Saints. With each practice Lorig misses, however, his hold on the starting gig, and likely a roster spot, slips, particularly with the Saints signing veteran Greg Jones last week.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Brees (oblique) participated in individual passing drills with the Saints' receivers Wednesday for the first time since being injured, NFL.com reports.
Impact: Brees is clearly approaching a return to practice after sitting out since straining his oblique Aug. 1. Nonetheless, Brees still isn't expected to play in Friday's preseason game versus Tennessee. Moving forward, Brees should increase his workload on a day-to-day basis and eventually re-join his teammates at full speed with ample time to prepare before the regular season. With his full return likely imminent within the next week, there's little reason to discount Brees in fantasy drafts, particularly as he should be well acquitted with head coach Sean Payton's offense in his ninth year in New Orleans.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Beckum signed with the Saints on Wednesday.
Impact: Beckum spent his first three seasons with the Giants; however, his career took a downward turn in New York's 2012 Super Bowl victory, when Beckum suffered a torn ACL in the second quarter. Since then, Beckhum has spent time on injured reserve, in addition to being signed by the Seahawks last February. Ultimately, Beckum couldn't stick with Seattle, who released him in May. Now, Beckum will aim to show the Saints' coaching staff he is healthy enough to merit a roster spot.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Bailey (undisclosed) returned to practice Tuesday, ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Bailey missed nearly two weeks of practice while nursing an undisclosed injury. Despite returning to the fold Tuesday, the veteran was limited to walkthrough and individual work. While it's unlikely that Bailey features in Friday's preseason game, it's still encouraging that he will now get on-field work to familiarize himself with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's scheme.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Brees (oblique) is not expected to play in the Saints' second preseason game Friday, ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Brees has missed the past week or so with a strained oblique injury and although he's edging closer to a return to practice, it comes as no surprise that he will be held out of another exhibition tilt. Nonetheless, the Saints' signal-caller is reportedly progressing well and should return to action with plenty of time before the regular season kicks off.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: With Drew Brees (oblique) sitting, Griffin played the majority of the Saints' first preseason game against the Rams on Monday, completing 16-of-23 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown.
Impact: Griffin may have seized the upper hand in the battle with Luke McCown to be Brees' backup quarterback with this performance. The key to Griffin's success was his ability to limit mistakes. McCown, who went 7-for-10 for 49 yards, wasn't able to do that, as he threw an interception on his first possession. If Griffin can continue to turn heads, he could be next in line to lead the potent Saints attack if anything were to happen to Brees this season.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Brees (strained oblique) sat out Monday's practice, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact: Coach Sean Payton has indicated that Brees is day-to-day, so while the signal caller's status is worth monitoring, there's nothing at this stage to suggest that a long-term injury is in play here.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Thomas (unspecified issue) returned to practice Monday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact: Thomas missed this past Friday's preseason game against the Rams and then sat out practice Sunday. Now back on the field, he would appear to have a solid shot to play this coming Friday against the Titans. At this stage, he's listed as the third back on the Saints' unofficial posted depth chart behind Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson, but following the departure of Darren Sproles, his ability as a pass catcher should keep Thomas of interest, notably in PPR formats, even if he does find himself in a committee situation.

News: Brees (oblique), who hasn't practiced since Aug. 1, wasn't sporting pads during Sunday's session, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact: While Brees didn't play in the Saints' preseason opener on Friday, he did warm up prior to kickoff by throwing passes to safety Jairus Byrd. Consider the Saints' star QB day-to-day for now.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Thomas (undisclosed injury) did not practice on Sunday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact: There's no word yet on what's ailing Thomas, who missed Friday's preseason game, but so far there has been nothing to suggest that he is dealing with a long-term issue.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cooks caught five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason opener against the Rams. He also returned the team's only two punts, gaining five total yards.
Impact: Cooks saw a surprising amount of the field, as he was active in the offense from the very beginning of the game until his 25-yard touchdown at the 3:18 mark of the third quarter. Said touchdown was arguably the highlight of the game, with Cooks catching a short pass, and then quickly juking a pair of defenders. Though he's listed behind Marques Colston, Kenny Stills, Robert Meachem and Nick Toon on the Saints' unofficial preseason depth chart, Cooks figures to have a significant role in the offense from day one and brings added value if he can take over the punt returning duties with the departure of Darren Sproles. With Lance Moore also landing elsewhere this offseason, there should be quite a few targets for Cooks to absorb, though he will have to overcome the steep rookie learning curve and find his niche in a Saints' offense that spreads the wealth around quite a bit.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Toon caught three passes for 11 yards in Friday's preseason opener against the Rams.
Impact: While the production was nothing to write home about, more important was the fact that Toon played significant snaps with the Saints' starting unit, lining up opposite Marques Colston at times in the first quarter, The early playing time could be indicative that the Saints view Toon as a big part of their offensive scheme. If Toon can continue to earn reps with the starters, he could be a player to keep an eye on in deeper leagues.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Robinson (leg) is the leader for the Saints' starting cornerback position opposite Keenan Lewis.
Impact: With Champ Bailey sitting out the Saints' preseason opener, said Holder about the starting spot, "[t]here's no question at this point that it's Patrick Robinson's job to lose." Though Robinson missed all of 2013 with a knee injury, he had a breakout fantasy year in 2012, compiling 63 tackles, 18 pass defenses and three interceptions for the Saints as a starter. Robinson's pre-injury production, however, was likely the result of opposing quarterbacks continuously targeting him in coverage, providing him ample opportunity to post career highs in both tackles and passes defended. If Robinson does indeed win the starting job this year, it's not unreasonable to expect big numbers again, as teams will most likely target the shaky corner rather than attack the well-regarded Lewis.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: With the NFL experimenting with a 33-yard extra point attempt, Dimke connected on an extra point attempt in the Saints' preseason opener in St. Louis on Friday night. Dimke also converted a 37-yard field goal in the second half as well.
Impact: Dimke is in competition for the Saints' kicker position with veteran Shayne Graham. Graham also successfully converted a 37-yard field goal and one longer extra point, but unlike DImke, he missed one long extra point as well, clanging his attempt off the left upright. Dimke and Graham have each had solid camps, and the preseason games could serve as a tiebreaker. Coach Sean Payton has suggested that Graham will be tough to beat because of his consistency and experience. While Graham still likely holds the lead in the competition, a few more misses by Graham in the coming exhibition games could see a changing of the guard. Keep an eye on the battle, as the winner would have plenty of value in the Saints' explosive offense.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: With the NFL experimenting with a 33-yard extra point attempt, Graham missed the extra point attempt off the left upright after the Saints' first touchdown in the team's preseason opener in St. Louis on Friday night. Graham did, however, connect on a 37-yard field goal later in the first quarter and on the longer extra point attempt in the second quarter.
Impact: Graham has made 375 out of 380 extra point attempts in his career, but this missed kick likely stung, as Graham is in competition for the Saints' kicker position with Derek Dimke. Dimke successfully converted a 37-yard field goal and the longer extra point in the second half. Dimke and Graham have each had solid camps, and the preseason games could serve as a tiebreaker. Still, coach Sean Payton has suggested that Graham will be tough to beat because of his consistency and experience. Despite the miss, Graham likely remains ahead in the competition. However, he would be wise not to miss too many more tries in the coming exhibition games.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Colston caught two passes for 10 yards on four targets in Friday's preseason opener against the Rams.
Impact: Colston's role probably won't change much, as the Saints drafted Brandin Cooks and will likely throw to Kenny Stills more often, but they also lost Lance Moore and Darren Sproles in the offseason. It's fair to expect a rebound of sorts from Colston, who battled a foot injury for much of last season, before coming on strong in the second half, followed by a huge performance against the Seahawks in the divisional playoffs. According to ESPN.com, Colston feels much better than he did at this time a year ago. The veteran wideout said training camp has been "a totally different experience" without having to contend with the foot injury.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Thomas was held out of Friday's preseason opener against the Rams, with no explanation given, New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Impact: Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson shined, which isn't particularly concerning for Thomas, who figures to work as the reception-minded part of a committee. What would actually be concerning is if Thomas were held out due to an injury, though he's only missed one game over the last three seasons.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Robinson gained 23 yards on five carries and 16 yards on two receptions in Friday's preseason opener against the Rams.
Impact: Robinson and Mark Ingram essentially alternated drives in the first half, allowing both backs to work against the Rams' starters and second-teamers. The duo figures to work in tandem with Pierre Thomas this season, with Thomas likely to handle most of the third-down work, while Robinson and Ingram get most of the carries. Though it may be difficult for either Ingram or Robinson to bust out while the other is healthy, Robinson showed improved patience in setting up his blocks and flashed his trademark ability to break tackles in the productive preseason opener. He could be an interesting sleeper in deeper leagues, as he holds plenty of upside in the Saints' explosive offense if the injury-prone Ingram succumbs to an affliction once again.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Ingram rushed eight times for 83 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason opener against the Rams.
Impact: Ingram, who split the first-half workload with Khiry Robinson, picked on the Rams' starters and backups. While it can't hurt that he's listed atop the initial depth chart, Ingram figures to work in tandem with Robinson and Pierre Thomas, as is tradition in New Orleans, which limits the upside of all three backs. Still, it's nice to see Ingram bust loose, as he showed impressive burst on some long runs late in the first half, giving hope that he can finally be a contributor to fantasy teams.
Thu. Aug 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Graham looks faster and stronger than he did last year, reports Mike Triplett of ESPN.com.
Impact: As Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro noted the other day after Graham beat him down the field in the scrimmage, "The dude's flying. He's faster than last year, he seems stronger." It's unlikely fantasy owners need reminding, but over the last three years, Graham has scored a remarkable 36 touchdowns, including 16 last year. Even if Vaccaro's comments are simply hot air, Graham looks primed to continue scoring touchdowns in bunches.
