News: Durant lined up at strong-side linebacker during Thursday's practice, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The Cowboys got a long look at Durant in the middle earlier in camp, but now seem focused on giving Rolando McClain and rookie Anthony Hitchens auditions at MLB. Durant seems likely to be among the starters when Week 1 rolls around, but at this point his exact spot is still up in the air.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wilber, who's mostly been practicing at strong-side linebacker this preseason, has started getting reps at defensive end again, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The Cowboys are still looking for the right combinations among their front seven, and it's entirely possible that Wilber could see snaps at both positions this season. Playing some DE on passing downs could help boost his sack total, but he's still not someone you want to invest an IDP roster spot in at this point.
Fri. Aug 22, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Rookie Anthony Hitchens, and not McClain (cramping), got the first-team reps at middle linebacker during Thursday's practice, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: While McClain is still probably the Cowboys' first choice among active players to man their MLB spot, at present nothing should be taken for granted, especially given McClain's history of retiring at the drop of a hat. This battle might not be settled until just before Week 1.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Hitchens handled all first-team reps at middle linebacker in Thursday's practice and is expected to play 2-to-3 quarters Saturday in Miami, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: After losing Sean Lee for the year during offseason drills due to a torn ACL, the Cowboys will turn to an unknown quantity in Hitchens, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Through two preseason contests, Hitchens has already racked up 12 tackles (eight solo) and a tackle for loss in semi-extended action. Thus, he can likely be relied upon for a generous number of tackles as a rookie.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | STATS
News: Holloman has what coach Jason Garrett describes as a career-ending neck injury.
Impact: Garrett said Thursday that Holloman has been dealing with a neck issue for a couple of weeks. The linebacker played in Saturday's preseason game against Baltimore, but came out midway through the fourth quarter.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Webb will not play in Saturday's preseason game in Miami due to a hip ailment, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Webb is currently slated for a significant role in the Cowboys' defense amid concerns at cornerback. Former first-rounder Morris Claiborne (shoulder) continues have durability issues, while Orlando Scandrick faces a four-game suspension to begin this season. Knowing that, Dallas can't risk another setback in their secondary, so Webb will be withheld from Saturday's exhibition in hopes of returning healthy by Week 1 of the regular season.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holloman's NFL career is likely over following his latest neck injury, ESPN Dallas reports.
Impact: Holloman suffered a neck injury during last Saturday's preseason game, which came after the linebacker missed seven games last season with a spinal contusion. The most recent occurrence unfortunately compounded Holloman's medical condition and continuing to play football would present a considerable risk to Holloman. As such, the linebacker's NFL career will likely come to a close after playing just nine games as a rookie last year.
Thu. Aug 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: For the second straight day on Wednesday, Claiborne (shoulder) was a limited participant in practice, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: He's hoping to play in Saturday's preseason game, but the Cowboys haven't made an official statement yet regarding his status.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McClain missed Wednesday's practice due to cramping, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: McClain began working as the Cowboys' starting middle linebacker this week, pushing teammate Justin Durant to Dallas' weakside position, but cramped up to end Tuesday's practice, thus holding him out Wednesday as well. Nonetheless, the Cowboys are intrigued by the prospect of McClain adding significant athleticism in the middle of their defense to help replace Sean Lee (knee). After having Wednesday off, McClain will hopefully be able to practice in Thursday's final session before Saturday's third preseason game versus Miami.
Wed. Aug 20, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Romo (rest) did not practice Wednesday, ESPN Dallas reports.
Impact: Romo continues to have his workload monitored by the Cowboys, as he's yet to practice three straight days this preseason following last year's back surgery. After going 4-of-5 for 80 yards and a touchdown in his preseason debut last weekend, Romo is expected to suit up once again Saturday versus the Dolphins.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Escobar (shoulder) returned to practice Tuesday, ESPN Dallas reports.
Impact: Escobar injured his shoulder while making a diving catch during Saturday's preseason game, but apparently the ailment was minor, as the tight end is already back on the practice field. Escobar projects as the Cowboys' No. 2 tight end behind Jason Witten once again this season.
Tue. Aug 19, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McClain will begin practicing at middle linebacker with the first-team defense this week, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The Cowboys are hoping McClain can win the job and serve as Sean Lee's replacement, so this will be a crucial week for McClain and the Dallas defense. If he does come away with the job, he could be a sneaky IDP play.
Mon. Aug 18, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Holloman suffered a neck injury during Saturday's game and has drawn concern from the Cowboys' organization regarding his playing status moving forward, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Holloman missed seven games last season with a spinal contusion, so Saturday's second neck injury comes with fear for his future. When asked about his thoughts that the linebacker's injury is career-threatening, Cowboys' coach Jason Garrett said, "We just got to see what the doctors say." As such, it sounds like Dallas' medical staff still has some work to do to provide a more definitive diagnosis on Holloman.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Street had no receptions on one target in Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens.
Impact: Street and fourth-year pro Dwayne Harris are hoping to push Cole Beasley for the No. 3 wide receiver role, and while owner Jerry Jones seems to be rooting for the rookie, Beasley remains the favorite. Beasley opened Saturday's game as the slot man in three-wide formations, and neither Harris nor Street made much of an impression.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Escobar suffered a right shoulder injury during the third quarter of Saturday's preseason game, ESPN.com reports.
Impact: Escobar's shoulder ailment surfaced, after the tight end stretched out to make a 37-yard reception. While coach Jason Garrett doesn't think Escobar's injury will be too serious, the player will undergo further testing Sunday to determine his status moving forward.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Williams rushed for 36 yards on five carries with a touchdown and caught two passes for 13 yards Saturday against the Ravens.
Impact: His competition for the third RB spot on the depth chart, Joseph Randle, also had an impressive game, so neither one was able to separate themselves. If the Cowboys aren't able to roster both, this battle could come down to who's more useful on special teams.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Randle had another strong outing Saturday, rushing for 41 yards on seven carries and catching an eight yard pass.
Impact: His competition for the third RB spot on the depth chart, Ryan Williams, also had an impressive game, so neither one was able to separate themselves. If the Cowboys aren't able to roster both, this battle could come down to who's more useful on special teams.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Minter, who signed with the Cowboys earlier in the week, had four tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble in Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens.
Impact: Given the complete lack of healthy, established pass rushers on the Cowboys' roster right now, Minter put himself in a great position to earn a job with his performance.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McClain led the Cowboys with six tackles in Saturday's preseason games against the Ravens.
Impact: He played about half the game, looking impressive at times, coming in at the end of the first quarter and getting some work in against the Ravens' first team offense. McClain showed flashes of the sideline-to-sideline force he was expected to be when he was drafted eighth overall in 2010, and he might yet win the Cowboys' starting middle linebacker job before the preseason is over.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dixon didn't play Saturday, after he was late for Friday's walk-through, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: It's been an up-and-down preseason for the seventh round pick, but provided that he's learned his lesson, he should be able to get back to the business of earning a roster spot.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Murray carried the ball eight times on Saturday for 34 yards, and added a 21-yard reception.
Impact: The Cowboys' first team offense looked to be in midseason form for the most part, although Murray and Tony Romo did botch a handoff that resulted in a Ravens fumble return for a TD. Dallas has insisted that they will put a renewed emphasis on their running game this season, both to take advantage of an offensive line featuring three recent first round picks and to take some pressure off Romo and their rag-tag defense. If he can stay healthy, Murray is set up to be a potentially dominant three-down back.
Aug 17, 2014 | RotoWire
News: After a successful preseason debut on Saturday, Romo (back) confirmed that he would play next week against the Dolphins, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Romo looked completely unhindered by his back against the Ravens on Saturday, executing a vintage spin to get away from pressure on one play and showing nice touch on a 31-yard touchdown pass to Dez Bryant later in the first quarter. All signs point to Romo being under center for Week 1.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Working as the No. 3 wide receiver with the first-team offense, Beasley caught one pass for 17 yards on two targets in Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens.
Impact: Beasley is competing with Dwayne Harris and Devin Street for playing time behind Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams. None of the three did much in Saturday's game, but the usage indicates that Beasley's the favorite to work as the No. 3 wideout come Week 1.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Escobar, who caught three passes for 58 yards on four targets in Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens, may have injured his right shoulder during the contest, Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas reports.
Impact: The Cowboys opened Saturday's game in a two-tight end set, with both Jason Witten and Escobar starting. Escobar looked the part of his strong stat line, though the possible injury puts somewhat of a damper on his night. While Witten isn't going anywhere, the Cowboys may find ways to work Escobar in this season. The 2013 second-round pick is still of greatest interest in dynasty leagues, as the Cowboys favor three-wide sets over two-tight end formations.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Bryant caught three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens.
Impact: The Ravens were without their top three cornerbacks for much of Bryant's time on the field, and the star receiver was simply too much for Baltimore's backup corners to handle. Of course, Bryant likely would turned in a similar performance against the starters, as both he and Tony Romo appeared to be in mid-season form. Locked in as the top target in a dangerous offense, Bryant has a high floor and a tantalizing ceiling.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Making his first appearance of the preseason, Romo (back) completed four-of-five passes for 80 yards and a touchdown Saturday against the Ravens.
Impact: Romo fumbled an attempted hand-off to DeMarco Murray but was otherwise sharp. He found Dez Bryant three times for 59 yards and a touchdown, with the prolific duo picking up right where they left off last season. The botched hand-off aside, the Cowboys' first-team offense looked good against a respectable Baltimore defense.
Sat. Aug 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Leary appears to be back in the lead for the Cowboys' starting left guard spot, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Given Mackenzy Bernadeau's ability to play all three interior line spots, this isn't a big surprise, but it's still reassuring that Leary is making his case on the field. The Cowboys could have a lot of problems this season, but the offensive line shouldn't be one of them.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Carr, who missed the early part of camp due to his mother's passing, isn't likely to play Saturday, the Cowboys' official site reports.
Impact: He'll still have a couple of preseason games in which to get up to speed. With Orlando Scanrick suspended to begin the season and Mo Claiborne hurt once again, the Cowboys need Carr to provide some stability in their secondary.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dixon (concussion) was medically cleared Thursday afternoon, the Cowboys' official site reports.
Impact: If he can get some work in Thursday, Dixon will likely play on Saturday against the Ravens.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Johnson will see a specialist to determine whether his back is contributing to his repeated hamstring injuries, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The safety hasn't yet played in an NFL game since being drafted in 2012, and if the Cowboys don't see some good news from Johnson on the injury front, they'll have little choice but to part ways with him.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Claiborne reinjured his shoulder during Wednesday's practice and will miss Saturday's preseason game, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The injury isn't thought to be serious, but the former sixth overall pick's inability to stay healthy is becoming chronic.
Fri. Aug 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Okoye (illness) could begin practicing with the Cowboys as soon as Monday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Details are finally surfacing about Okoye's illness, an extremely rare and potentially fatal autoimmune disorder that causes brain inflammation, and given what Okoye's been through over the past 17 months, it's amazing that he's even close to a return to the field. The Cowboys will understandably be very cautious with Okoye, but it's beginning to look like he will have a role on their defensive line this season.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Watson plans to sign with the Cowboys, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Watson was waived by the Patriots earlier this week, but didn't take long to catch on elsewhere. The rookie will compete with a cast that includes Gavin Escobar, James Hanna, Dallas Walker and Jordan Najvar to earn reps behind starter Jason Witten. The Cowboys will need to make a corresponding roster move.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Gardner will likely need season-ending shoulder surgery, Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reports.
Impact: Gardner was a seventh-round pick competing for playing time on the defensive line, but it sounds like his season could be over before it even begins.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | STATS
News: Romo will play his first game for the Dallas Cowboys since undergoing back surgery for a herniated disk last December. Romo will start for the Cowboys in Saturday's exhibition game against the Baltimore Ravens. Romo missed Dallas' exhibition opener against San Diego as the Cowboys are easing him back into things after his second back surgery in the past two years.
Impact: Romo said he gave no thought to skipping the preseason to make sure he stayed healthy, saying the only way to get better at football is to play football. It will be his first chance to play in a game under new play caller Scott Linehan.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Moore appears to be the top candidate to replace Orlando Scandrick in the slot corner role while Scandrick serves his four game suspension, Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: BW Webb hasn't had a good training camp so far, and Terrance Mitchell has looked impressive at times but is still making rookie mistakes, meaning the job is Moore's almost by default. The Cowboys' schedule is somewhat favorable, as games against the 49ers and Titans might not require the Dallas secondary to deal with many three-WR sets, but Week 4's matchup against the Saints could be brutal for their depleted secondary.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Claiborne (knee) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The Cowboys need Claiborne to stay healthy this season, especially with Orlando Scandrick suspended for the first four games of the season.
Wed. Aug 13, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Selvie (groin) returned to practice on Tuesday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: There's no word yet on whether he'll play Saturday in the Cowboys' second preseason game, but it looks like Selvie should be fine for Week 1.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Webb got into a brief altercation with an unidentified fan during a brawl at Tuesday's joint practice with the Raiders, ESPN.com reports.
Impact: The brawl started when Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne slammed Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera to the turf on the sideline near Raiders fans. A fan hit Webb in the back twice with his hand and a third time with a helmet before Webb swiped at the fan with his right hand.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Green was acquired by the Cowboys from the Patriots on Tuesday in exchange for defensive lineman Ben Bass, DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: On the heels of starting cornerback Orlando Scandrick's four-game suspension for recreational drug use, the Cowboys acted quickly in stocking up on depth in their defensive backfield. Green bounced between the Patriots' active roster and practice squad last season but should have a more legitimate chance at contending for spot in dime packages with his new squad.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced that Romo (back) would play a few series in Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens, NFL.com reports.
Impact: The Cowboys kept Romo out of Thursday's preseason opener as a precaution following his December back surgery, but the quarterback has otherwise looked 100 percent healthy in training camp. While Romo does carry some amount of risk due to having two back procedures during his career, he'll be protected by one of the league's better offensive lines and has made a push for 30 touchdown passes each of the last three seasons. He'd make for a solid mid-round target in fantasy drafts for those who decide to wait on a quarterback.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Orlando Scandrick's four-game suspension means that Claiborne should be in the starting lineup Week 1.
Impact: He'll need to stay healthy, which is by no means guaranteed with Claiborne, but this does give him a golden chance to reestablish himself in the Cowboys' secondary.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Melton (groin) could miss up to a week of camp and has already been ruled out for Saturday's preseason game, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: It'll be the second preseason game he's missed. Although the injury isn't directly related to his knee surgery, it's now a little more uncertain whether Melton will be ready for Week 1.
Tue. Aug 12, 2014 | STATS
News: Scandrick is getting a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Team owner Jerry Jones told reporters at a media party in Malibu, California, on Monday night that Scandrick tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and lost an appeal on the ban.
Impact: Scandrick will be eligible to return Oct. 5 against Houston. He will miss the opener against San Francisco, and his final game on the sidelines will be against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, who set an NFL record with 40 first downs against Dallas last year. Scandrick is going into his seventh season.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Updating a previous report, Scandrick's suspension was a result of a violation of the NFL's drug policy.
Impact: Scandrick's suspension is said to be for PED use, but according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the positive test was triggered by a recreational drug he took during a trip to Mexico. He'll miss the first four games of 2014 as a result and is now one failed drug test away from a potential season-long ban.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Scandrick has been suspended for the first four weeks of the 2014 season, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: A reason for Scandrick's suspension has yet to be disclosed, but the duration was confirmed by Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones on Monday. The suspension will give Morris Claiborne a clearer path to a starting cornerback job to begin the season.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Crawford left practice Sunday after experiencing some tightness in his calf, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Given that he lost last season due to a torn Achilles tendon, the Cowboys aren't taking any chances with Crawford. Big things are expected from him this year, but he'll need to stay healthy first.
Mon. Aug 11, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Cowboys' decision to hold Dunbar out of last Thursday's preseason opener is a sign the club is expecting big things from him this season, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Dunbar joined Dez Bryant, Tony Romo (back), DeMarco Murray and Jason Witten on the sidelines Thursday. Stuck behind Murray on the depth chart, the Cowboys nonetheless think Dunbar can be a real weapon for them, even if he only sees 10-12 touches a game, and his performance last Thanksgiving before blowing out his knee (82 yards on 12 carries) backs up that impression. Note that new offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was able to turn both Reggie Bush and Joique Bell into fantasy assets last season with the Lions, so if he stays healthy, Dunbar could end up being much more than just Murray's handcuff in 2014.
Sun. Aug 10, 2014 | STATS
News: He is on IR with an undisclosed injury.
Impact: He had no fantasy value.
Sun. Aug 10, 2014 | STATS
News: Whaley is done for the season.
Impact: He had no fantasy value.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Melton left Sunday's practice with a groin injury, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The good news is Melton's departure was not related to the knee injury he is dealing with, but the bad news is he is now dealing with two different setbacks. Melton will be sent for further evaluation, and it remains to be seen when he will be able to get back on the field.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Melton left Sunday's practice for an unspecified reason, ESPN.com's Todd Archer reports.
Impact: Melton has been dealing with a knee injury, so there's a good chance his early exit is related to that. Expect an update on Melton's status as more details emerge.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Watson was waived by the Patriots, the Boston Herald reports.
Impact: As was fellow rookie tight end Justin Jones, with the team electing to cycle Ben Hartsock, Steve Maneri and Terrence Miller into the depth mix at the position on Sunday.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Claiborne (knee) returned to practice on Saturday.
Impact: Brandon Carr also rejoined the club, after missing time due to the death of his mother. The Cowboys' secondary should be at close to full strength for their next preseason game against the Ravens.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McClain (hamstring) returned to practice on Saturday.
Impact: He'll continue to try and get back in game shape, after sitting out all of last season.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Church (ankle) returned to practice on Saturday.
Impact: The Cowboys' safety should once again be in line for a big IDP season, given the patchwork front seven he'll play behind.
Aug 10, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Romo (back) had his best day of practice so far on Saturday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: His arm strength looked good, and the issues he'd been having throwing deep balls seems to be a thing of the past. The Cowboys will continue to go easy on Romo throughout training camp, but he appears to be well on his way to being ready for Week 1.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dallas waived/injured Malena (quadriceps) on Saturday, ESPN Dallas' Todd Archer reports.
Impact: If Malena goes unclaimed on waivers -- something that wouldn't be surprising given his modest pedigree as a prospect -- he would end up on Dallas' IR list.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | STATS
News: Carr is on the field with the Dallas Cowboys after missing the first two weeks of training camp to be with his mother in the final days of her long battle with breast cancer.
Impact: The veteran cornerback was at practice Saturday, a day after reporting for camp. Carr missed the first 11 workouts and the preseason opener at San Diego.
Sat. Aug 9, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Carr (personal) arrived at Cowboys training camp in Oxnord, CA, on Friday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: One of the Cowboys' starting cornerbacks, Carr missed the opening weeks of training camp in order to be with his ailing mother, who passed away in late July.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Dixon, who racked up 12 tackles in Thursday's preseason opener, left the game in the fourth quarter to be checked for a possible concussion, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: Dixon said he felt fine after the game, but he may be held out of a couple of practices as a precaution. He certainly made an impact Thursday and may have solidified his spot on the roster, but his preseason snaps will likely dwindle as the Cowboys' secondary gets healthier. Don't expect him to be much more than a special teams player come week 1.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Despite the fact that Dez Bryant, Jason Witten and DeMarco Murray all got the night off, Weeden looked sharp in Thursday's preseason opener, completing 13-of-17 passes for 107 yards and a TD.
Impact: He played the entire first half, and looked very comfortable in the Cowboys' offense. Should Tony Romo not make it through the entire 16-game schedule, Weeden seems ready to step in.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Selvie (groin) did not suit up for Thursday's preseason opener against the Chargers.
Impact: The injury seems to be a minor one, but given the thin nature of the Cowboys' pass rush they weren't going to take any chances with a Week 1 starter.
Fri. Aug 8, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Melton (knee) did not suit up for Thursday's preseason opener against the Chargers.
Impact: That's not a surprise, as the Cowboys have been easing Melton back into action with an eye on having him ready for Week 1.
Thu. Aug 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Williams gained 29 yards on eight carries and 31 yards on five receptions in Thursday's preseason opener against the Chargers.
Impact: Not a bad start in Dallas for Williams, who is hoping to push Joseph Randle for the No. 3 running back role. The Cowboys have an excellent offensive line and a pair of running backs with durability issues, so there could be some deep league appeal here with the former second-round draft pick.
Thu. Aug 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Street caught all four of his targets for 43 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against the Chargers.
Impact: One of the many receivers competing for snaps behind Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams, Street has the highest ceiling of a group that includes Cole Beasley and Dwayne Harris. While it doesn't mean much to have the highest ceiling of that bunch, Street was referred to as the team's No. 3 wideout by owner Jerry Jones, according to FOXSports.com. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean Street will be the No. 3 receiver come Week 1, and he actually worked behind both Beasley and Harris on Thursday.
Thu. Aug 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Williams caught both of his targets for 19 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against the Chargers.
Impact: After a promising rookie season, Williams doesn't appear to have any competition for the No. 2 wide receiver role. The offense will likely focus on Dez Bryant, DeMarco Murry and Jason Witten, but Williams was an excellent big-play threat last season, recording 44 catches for 736 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games, despite getting just 74 targets.
Thu. Aug 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Randle gained 50 yards on 13 carries in Thursday's preseason opener against the Chargers.
Impact: The Cowboys rested their star players and No. 2 RB Lance Dunbar, allowing Randle to dominate the "first-team" touches. Randle could perhaps face competition for the No. 3 running back role from former second-round draft pick Ryan Williams, who rushed for 29 yards on eight carries, adding five receptions for 31 yards on seven targets. With both DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar subject to durability concerns, the No. 3 running back battle is a bit more important than elsewhere around the league. It's also worth noting that the Cowboys have a strong offensive line, although a weak defense might force the team to abandon the run at times.
Thu. Aug 7, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Malena strained his quadriceps and is questionable to return to Thursday's preseason matchup with the Chargers, the Cowboys' Official Site reports.
Impact: Malena is currently listed as the Cowboys' fifth running back, so he'll need a break or two to crack the team's final roster, once he returns to action.
Mon. Aug 4, 2014 | STATS
News: Romo wrapped up his most strenuous day so far at training camp by saying his surgically repaired back would get a rest. He will not play in the preseason opener at San Diego.
Impact: The Dallas quarterback also planned to sit out a day of practice this week, the latest indication that the Cowboys are closely managing the 34-year-old Romo's recovery. Romo pushed himself through a long practice on the team's ninth workout day of camp Sunday. He had been off the previous two days and skipped two practices earlier. Fantasy owners should be concerned.
