News: Romo will sit out a competitive practice for the first time at training camp as the Dallas quarterback continues to ease his way into playing shape coming off back surgery.
Impact: Coach Jason Garrett said Romo wouldn't participate in the afternoon practice Tuesday after getting "mental work" in the morning walkthrough session. Garrett said Romo has not had any setbacks. Romo skipped some lighter sessions earlier in camp, but went through the first two full-pad workouts Saturday and Sunday. The team was off Monday.

News: Claiborne says he's "not accepting anything less than great" from himself after just one interception in each of his two years.
Impact: Claiborne had already told reporters he was ready to prove he was worthy of Dallas' dramatic move up the draft board to get him with the sixth overall pick in 2012. Now he's talking big again in a pivotal season for the third-year cornerback.

News: Johnson left Sunday's practice with a hamstring injury, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: The Cowboys continue to give Johnson chances to win a job, and he continues to suffer lower body injuries instead. If this latest strain proves to be at all serious, it wouldn't be surprising to see the team cut him loose.

News: Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones says the team has no plans to offer Murray a contract extension this season, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: Murray is coming off the best season of his career in 2013 and seems poised to do even better this year, but given his injury history, the Cowboys seem content to let him prove his value on the field before deciding whether to offer him a new contract.

News: Carter says he's aiming to rack up at least 120 tackles this season, the Dallas Morning News reports. "I haven't got over a hundred yet, but I'm aiming to get at least 120," Carter said on Saturday. "With this scheme, I'm going all the way. Why not? I've got to get my production up with sacks, interceptions, whatever the case may be, and just go out there and do my part for this defense."
Impact: With Sean Lee out for the season, the Cowboys would love for Carter to step up and become a dominant force for them. He's got the athletic ability to excel, but given his rough 2013 performance, owners will likely want to see Carter prove it on the field before risking an IDP spot on him.

News: Melton (knee) didn't take part in team drills during Saturday's practice, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The Cowboys aren't going to rush Melton back into action. Look for his workload to start ramping up as training camp progresses.
July 27, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Claiborne got into an altercation with Terrance Williams during Saturday's practice, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Normally training camp scuffles aren't worth reporting on, but given that Claiborne had both shoulder and finger surgeries in the offseason it's good to see that he's not afraid to get physical this early in camp. He's got to win a starting spot back from Orlando Scandrick, but a healthy and motivated Claiborne, who was the sixth overall pick in 2012, might yet emerge as a difference-maker in the Cowboys' secondary.

News: In his first practice on Saturday since back surgery, Romo seemed sharp in both team drills and working against the secondary, the Dallas Morning News reports. "I thought he looked good," quarterback coach Wade Wilson said. "He looked fresh. [His back] wasn't bothering him at all. He had good velocity on his throws and good accuracy on his throws."
Impact: Romo will get right back on the field Sunday, which is another good sign that everything is going as planned in his recovery. His age and history of back trouble may cause some fantasy owners to shy away from him, but after the elite trio of Rodgers, Manning, and Brees are off the board, no QB may be better positioned for a huge season than Romo, given the weapons on the Cowboys roster, the young, talented offensive line in front of him and the addition of former Lions coach Scott Linehan on the sidelines.

News: Romo (back) will participate in his first contact practice of training camp Saturday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Romo and the Cowboys haven't wavered in their insistence that Romo's surgically repaired back is a non-issue at this point, but considering the severity of the initial injury, Romo's progress through camp is something to monitor. He's roughly seven months removed from surgery.

News: McClain was back on the practice field with the Dallas Cowboys a day after the linebacker's disorderly conduct conviction in an Alabama courtroom.
Impact: McClain said Saturday he was ready to resume his career after the former top 10 pick by Oakland retired and quit twice in Baltimore. The Ravens traded him to Dallas earlier this month. The 25-year-old McClain was sentenced to 18 days in jail on charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in his hometown of Decatur, Alabama. He appealed the conviction.
Fri. July 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: McClain will appeal his conviction of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, ESPN Dallas reports.
Impact: McClain's appeal simply means that he won't immediately serve his 18-day jail sentence, and the case essentially will start from scratch. He'll likely miss time at some point during camp due to court proceedings.

News: Durant lined up at middle linebacker with the first team defense during the initial walkthrough of training camp on Thursday, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: With Sean Lee out for the season, Durant will get first crack at replacing him in the starting lineup. He does have a 100-tackle season on his resume with the Lions in 2012, but the veteran doesn't have much upside, and if a younger player like DeVonte Holloman or fourth round pick Anthony Hitchens emerges in camp it wouldn't be a surprise to see Durant pushed aside.
Fri. July 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Wilber was the strong-side linebacker with the first team defense during the initial walkthrough of training camp on Thursday, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: Justin Durant got the nod in the middle in Sean Lee's absence, while Bruce Carter maintained his spot at weak-side LB. The Cowboys will likely try a lot of different linebacker combinations in camp as they attempt to replace the injured Lee, but Wilber currently has the inside track on one of the starting spots.
Fri. July 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Mincey lined up with the first team defense during the initial walkthrough of training camp on Thursday, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: George Selvie, who revived his career last season with the Cowboys, manned the other starting defensive end spot, and Dallas is hoping Mincey can experience a similar turnaround for them in 2014. The veteran will have to fend off rookie DeMarcus Lawrence in camp to maintain his starting gig, however.
Fri. July 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cowboys coach Jason Garrett expects McClain to rejoin the Cowboys on Friday night, immediately following his court appearance in Alabama, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: Given his checkered past and multiple retirements it's something of a long shot that McClain will have any kind of meaningful role with the Dallas defense this season, but the team is prepared to bring him up to speed slowly in camp.
Fri. July 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Carr missed the beginning of training camp to deal with a family matter, Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Impact: The team has given Carr permission to be away from camp until the situation is resolved. He's not expected to miss much of camp, however, and his starting cornerback spot is secure.
Fri. July 25, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Okoye has been placed on the non-football injury list.
Impact: He's apparently still dealing with the medical issue that sidelined him for all of last season. Until he's able to get back on the field, it's hard to see him having a prominent role with the Cowboys.

News: Leary, who strained his hamstring during a pre-camp conditioning test, was placed on the active/PUP list, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Impact: Cowboys coach Jason Garrett expects the guard to be back at practice early next week, but any extended absence could make it tough for Leary to hang onto his starting job.

News: McClain missed the start of training camp to return to Alabama for trial on charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said McClain returned to his home state Wednesday, and the team was hopeful he would get back from Decatur, Alabama, in time for the third day of camp workouts Saturday.
Impact: McClain's trial was set for Friday after a judge rejected a delay. McClain traveled with the team from Dallas to Oxnard, California, on Tuesday. The Cowboys acquired the rights to McClain from Baltimore on July 1. He was the eighth overall pick by Oakland out of Alabama in 2010 but hasn't played since 2012.
Thu. July 24, 2014 | STATS
News: Dallas placed Okoye on the active non-football illness list.
Impact: The former top 10 pick from 2007 is trying a comeback after being out of football last season.
Thu. July 24, 2014 | STATS
News: Dallas placed Leary on the active/physically unable to perform list to start training camp.
Impact: Leary started all 16 games at left guard in 2013.
Thu. July 24, 2014 | STATS
News: The Cowboys have placed Spencer on the active/physically unable to perform list to start training camp.
Impact: Spencer had a career-high 11 sacks in 2012 but played just the opener last year because of knee trouble that started in the offseason.
Thu. July 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: The Cowboys have placed Spencer (knee) on their active/PUP list, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The Cowboys hope that Spencer -- who continues to recover from microfracture surgery on his left knee on Oct. 1 -- can practice at some point during training camp. That said, the report notes that it's possible that the defensive end could start the season on the team's reserve/PUP list, a scenario that would keep Spencer out for at least six games out of the gate.
Thu. July 24, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Romo (back) is expected to be a full participant when the Cowboys' training camp begins on Thursday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The team will monitor Romo's workload in the early part of camp, given that he was limited this offseason while he rehabbed from his back surgery, but it looks like all systems are go for the quarterback.
Wed. July 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday that Orton indicated in the offseason that he does not plan to retire, Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: NFL.com reported back in May that Orton told the Cowboys he wanted to retire, but Jones refuted that claim Wednesday. It doesn't change a whole lot, as Orton was cut by the Cowboys earlier this month and may have changed his mind about continuing his playing career. If he does latch on elsewhere, Orton will simply be a low-upside backup.
Wed. July 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: An Alabama judge has denied a motion to delay the start of McClain's trial for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, and as a result the linebacker will probably miss the start of training camp, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: The Cowboys' first practice takes place Thursday afternoon in California, but McClain will have to be in Alabama for Friday. Dallas will be using camp to determine the makeup of their linebacking corps with Sean Lee out for the season, but there's no guarantee as yet that McClain will be part of the solution.
Wed. July 23, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Melton (knee) is expected to be medically cleared to begin training camp, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: Some rare good news for the Cowboys' defense, as their biggest free agent signing appears to be recovered from his torn ACL. Melton takes over the three-technique DT spot that Jason Hatcher thrived in last season for Dallas, and given his familiarity with coordinator Rod Marinelli's system from their days with the Bears there's no reason to think a healthy Melton can't put up numbers similar to his big 2012 (44 tackles, six sacks).
Tue. July 22, 2014 | STATS
News: An Alabama judge has denied a motion from Dallas linebacker Rolando McClain to delay his trial because of training camp.
Impact: Decatur Municipal Court Clerk Jessica Haggard said Tuesday that Judge Bill Cook Jr. declined to push back the trial set for Friday on charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. McClain's local attorney, Carl Cole, had filed a motion to reschedule because the Cowboys start camp on Thursday. Dallas acquired the rights to McClain from Baltimore on July 1. He was the eighth overall pick by Oakland out of Alabama in 2010 but had retired and hasn't played since 2012.
Mon. July 21, 2014 | STATS
News: The Dallas Cowboys signed Briscoe on Monday.
Impact: Briscoe was a sixth-round pick by Cincinnati in 2010 and landed on Tampa Bay's practice squad after getting released. He played in 18 games over two seasons with the Buccaneers and seven games with Washington in 2012 before spending last season on injured reserve.
Mon. July 21, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Briscoe has signed with the Cowboys, ESPN reports.
Impact: Briscoe injured his shoulder during the Redskins' final preseason game last season, ultimately costing him the entire campaign. His best professional season came with the Buccaneers in 2011, when he made 35 receptions for 387 yards and six touchdowns. Still just 24, Briscoe will compete for a roster spot during training camp, as the Cowboys are a bit thin at wide receiver right now.

News: Orton has been released by the Dallas Cowboys. The expected move Wednesday came after Tony Romo's backup skipped all the offseason workouts amid reports Orton was considering retirement.
Impact: Orton was fined about $70,000 for failing to report during the offseason and missing the mandatory minicamp in June. The move saves Dallas about $3.25 million this season, but will cost the team about that amount on the salary cap over the next two seasons.
Wed. July 16, 2014 | RotoWire
News: With Kyle Orton officially no longer in the Cowboys' plans, Weeden will enter the season as Tony Romo's backup.
Impact: Given Romo's injury history, Weeden could be worth keeping on your radar, but his stint in Cleveland doesn't provide much hope that he could be a productive fantasy option as a starter.
Tue. July 15, 2014 | STATS
News: The Dallas Cowboys are releasing Orton after their backup quarterback missed all the offseason workouts amid reports he was considering retirement.
Impact: The 31-year-old Orton started the finale last year after Tony Romo injured his back a week earlier. The Cowboys lost to Philadelphia, their third straight season-ending defeat against an NFC East rival with a playoff berth on the line. The new backup is likely to be Brandon Weeden. Cleveland's first-round draft pick in 2012.
Tue. July 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Orton was released by the Cowboys on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact: After months of speculation, the Cowboys finally decided to part ways with Orton, who has openly pondered retirement since May. The team will now rely upon the arms of Brandon Weeden and Caleb Hanie to back up Tony Romo.
Tue. July 15, 2014 | RotoWire
News: Leary pleaded guilty to a 2012 DUI, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Impact: He'll receive 18 months probation from the state of Texas, and as a first-time offender under the CBA, Leary won't face a league suspension either. He'll head into training camp the incumbent starter at left guard but will need to fend off Mackenzy Bernadeau and Uche Nwaneri to keep the job.
Mon. July 14, 2014 | STATS
News: Leary has pleaded guilty to a first-time drunken driving charge. Leary was arrested in suburban Dallas in September 2012 after failing a field sobriety test. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, he was pulled over for multiple traffic violations and on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Impact: Leary was a Memphis University guard before the Cowboys signed him as a free agent in 2012. He has had a chronic knee problem.
