NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31326278 What a difference a week makes What+a+difference+a+week+makes NFL

Last Monday morning, we were ready to crown the Patriots as Super Bowl XLVII champions, we spoke of RG3 in the same breath as Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning, and the Panthers and Bills were written off as nothing more than August media darlings. A lot can certainly change in a matter of seven days (or in the cases of the Giants and Cowboys, 11 days). Here are my Ten Takeaways from an exciting Week 2.

NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31321571 The 49ers’ O makes them the class of the NFC The+49ers%26rsquo%3B+O+makes+them+the+class+of+the+NFC NFL

With 11 starters returning from the league’s top defense in 2011, we knew Vic Fangio’s unit was going to keep the 49ers in just about every game this season. What we didn’t know was how reliable the offense was going to be. After putting up 30 points in Green Bay in Week 1, the 49ers’ offense controlled the line of scrimmage and put up 27 points in Sunday night’s win over the Lions. Frank Gore rumbled for 89 yards and a touchdown, Alex Smith did more than merely manage the game (throwing two TDs to Vernon Davis, pictured), and free-agent acquisition Mario Manningham made an impact. When San Francisco needed to convert third downs in the fourth quarter, they did, time and time again. The 49ers defense is great. This season, the offense is very, very good, too. The 49ers — as a whole — are just plain nasty.

NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31324292 I don't think Schiano was wrong to play to the whistle I+don%27t+think+Schiano+was+wrong+to+play+to+the+whistle NFL

A young team, on the road in the defending champs’ building, down one score ... and Greg Schiano instructed his defense to give its best effort on the final play of the game. That's' how I see it, and I don’t see anything wrong with the way Schiano had his D treat the Giants' final kneel down of the game. He’s a first-year coach trying to send a message to a very young team. That message is to never give up and to play the full sixty minutes. Schiano got an earful from Tom Coughlin at midfield and the New York media’s giving it to him even worse, but I don’t see any crime in not playing by the “unwritten” rules of the NFL. It’s the coaches that shake things up, challenge the norm, and establish their own cultures of winning — see Jim Harbaugh last year — that have success right out of the gates. Schiano's setting a tone in Tampa. After finishing the year with 10 straight losses a season ago, he doesn't want to see this team let up. Ever. And I'm fine with that.

NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31323459 The Saints defense has serious issues The+Saints+defense+has+serious+issues NFL

In two weeks, New Orleans has already given up a combined 75 points and has allowed Cam Newton (pictured with ball) and Robert Griffin III to run and pass all over them to the tune of 922 combined yards of offense. The Saints face the woeful 0-2 Chiefs next Sunday in what will make for the rare Week 3 “must-win” game. The last time the Saints started 0-2 was five years ago when they finished 7-9 and failed to make the playoffs. One factoid that may bring some ray of hope in New Orleans today? Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo coached a Giants defense that gave up 80 points in two losses to start the 2007 NFL campaign. That squad, of course, went on to win to a Super Bowl.

NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31326277 The Cardinals' D is quietly one of the league’s very best The+Cardinals%27+D+is+quietly+one+of+the+league%26rsquo%3Bs+very+best NFL

Few outside the greater Phoenix metropolitan area seemed to take notice when the Cardinals finished the season with wins in five of their final six games last season. No one gave much love to Ray Horton’s Arizona D when it ruined a greatly hyped rookie quarterback’s debut in Week 1. Well, this unit won’t sneak up on anybody anymore after Week 2. The Cardinals flat-out dominated the Patriots in New England on Sunday, marking New England’s first home opener loss in 11 seasons playing in Gillette Stadium. Calais Campbell and Darnell Dockett were in the New England backfield the entire game, as Sam Acho, Daryl Washington, Patrick Peterson (pictured after an interception), and Quentin Groves made big plays throughout. Arizona’s D isn’t just good. It’s great.

The five rookie starting quarterbacks went 1-4 in their NFL debuts last week, but bounced back to go 3-2 in their Week 2 games on Sunday. Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden (pictured) responded from nightmare opening days to each look more than competent in their second career starts. Andrew Luck went 20 of 31 for 224 yards and tossed two touchdowns in a gritty 23-20 win over the Vikings, and Russell Wilson looked great — completing 15 of 20 passes and running for 28 yards — in a 27-7 upset win over the Cowboys. In defeat, RG3 threw for 206 yards and ran for another 82, accounting for three touchdowns in St. Louis. All five rookies— even Mr. Weeden — looked good on Sunday.

NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31323461 Danny Amendola is Wes Welker Lite Danny+Amendola+is+Wes+Welker+Lite NFL

It’s the plight of lazy NFL writers everywhere — anytime a white receiver does anything good, he’s labeled as a “Wes Welker-type.” It’s such a common occurrence that Dan Rubenstein, a writer for SB Nation, has started the Twitter hash tag “#WesWelkerType.” But in the case of Rams receiver Danny Amendola, the description’s actually accurate. Amendola, who caught 15 balls for 160 yards and scored a touchdown in Sunday’s 31-28 win over the Redskins, is awfully similar to Welker. Though he’s two inches taller and three pounds heavier than the NFL’s 2011 receptions leader, Amendola, like Welker, is an undrafted slot receiver out of Texas Tech. The Rams are 1-1. It’s the first time St. Louis hasn’t started 0-2 since 2006.

They didn’t do that last year: Though they wouldn’t win any beauty pageants (leave that to Honey Boo Boo, I suppose), the Eagles find themselves alone atop the NFC East standings with a 2-0 record this week. With its 24-23 comeback victory over the Ravens on Sunday, Philly became the first team in NFL history to win each of its first two games of the season by one point. The Eagles also committed four turnovers in the win. In doing so, they became just the fifth team in the last 50 seasons to go 2-0 despite turning over the ball at least four times in each of their first two games. The lesson as always: It doesn’t matter how you get there, as long as you get the win in the end.

NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31326280 Kansas City GM Scott Pioli deserves whatever heat he takes this week Kansas+City+GM+Scott+Pioli+deserves+whatever+heat+he+takes+this+week NFL

Scott Pioli has no excuses this week for the way the Chiefs have started the season. Last season, they gave up 89 points in their first two games but had injuries and misfortunate across the board in those two defeats. Well, Eric Berry and Jamaal Charles are 100-percent healthy in 2012. Todd Haley’s no longer the coach, as he’s currently running the offense in Pittsburgh. And Matt Cassel — a guy Pioli’s paying like a franchise quarterback and who is seen here fumbling — still doesn’t look the part. Kansas City, a dark-horse pick out of the AFC West for a lot of writers this summer, is 0-2 and has been outscored 75-41 so far. The GM, whether he agrees with the assessment or not, is at least partially to blame.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Roger Goodell’s not going to lose this battle. He doesn’t lose labor battles. The players should know that by now. No matter how horrendous the officiating, he’s not going to give in to the NFLRA’s demands. On Sunday, Joe Flacco complained about the “integrity of the game” in his postgame presser and Packers offensive guard T.J. Lang tweeted, “I miss Ed Hochuli.” The players can do something about this. If they show solidarity and strike, it’ll bring Ed Hochuli and the other officials back. Until then, complaining and tweeting isn’t going to do all that much. I promise.

NFL 5 43 NFL Week 2's top 10 takeaways 31321573 The Jets are who we thought they were The+Jets+are+who+we+thought+they+were NFL

After becoming the first team since 1977 to not score a touchdown in their first three preseason games, the Jets' offense came out and put up 34 points in a 48-28 win over the Buffalo Bills last week. In Week 2, the Gang Green offense looked awful. New York had just 219 yards of offense in a 27-10 loss in Pittsburgh. Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez (No. 6) completed just 10 passes, with four of them coming on the Jets’ first offensive drive. Tim Tebow (No. 15) had one long run but did very little else. Santonio Holmes dropped passes, the running game stalled, and there was little creativity in the play-calling. Now New York travels to Miami, site of Holmes’ epic Week 17 meltdown last season.
