Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886854 #1 - Adrian Peterson %231+-+Adrian+Peterson Fantasy Football

This really isn’t fair. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a PPR league or not, Adrian Peterson should be the first player selected. Any dope can say “there’s an injury risk.” It’s football, EVERYBODY has that risk. The fact of the matter is ADP was the closest anyone has been to the single-season rushing record in the past 10 years. Eight yards, nine to break the record, separated Peterson from greatness. Next, he eyes 2,500 yards. I’m not going to be the guy to pass on him. – Adam Meyer

Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886043 #2 - Doug Martin %232+-+Doug+Martin Fantasy Football

After just one season in the NFL, the 31st overall draft pick in 2012 made general managers, in reality and fantasy, wish they hadn’t passed on him. When last year came to a close, Doug Martin was second only to the freakish Adrian Peterson in fantasy stats. Martin’s 472 receiving yards were fifth among other running backs, too. While some experts say a sophomore slump is on the horizon, I believe his ceiling is much higher than critics believe. – Adam Meyer

Cary Edmondson - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G2_20130823151408859_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G2_20130823151408859_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886045 #3 - Arian Foster %233+-+Arian+Foster Fantasy Football

As a fan of conspiracy theories, I’d like to believe that people are talking Arian Foster down so that he’ll fall to them in fantasy drafts. Unfortunately, back ailments are the real reason he’s slipping and could possibly prevent Foster from playing in Week 1. Rumors of Ben Tate splitting carries have also emerged, like they seem to do every season, decreasing Foster’s value even more. Maybe a timeshare in the backfield will give Foster some needed rest and provide a bigger spark when his number is called. – Adam Meyer

Thomas Campbell - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G3_20130823151407855_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G3_20130823151407855_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886856 #4 - C.J. Spiller %234+-+C.J.+Spiller Fantasy Football

This player is tricky to project for 2013. Last season, C.J. Spiller finished with the sixth-most fantasy points among RBs, yet only averaged 12.9 rushing attempts per game. Considering that Spiller also averaged 6.0 yards per carry, simple math suggests that if he had even 80 more attempts, Spiller would land in the top three. I know that his rushing average will probably decrease a little, but it’s something to think about going into your draft. – Adam Meyer

Robert Mayer - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G4_20130823151409860_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G4_20130823151409860_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886855 #5 - Ray Rice %235+-+Ray+Rice Fantasy Football

Following Darren Sproles, Ray Rice had the second-most receptions by a running back…in back-to-back seasons. There is a lot of talk about Bernard Pierce stealing some carries from Rice this season, but don’t expect the same in the passing game as Pierce only caught seven passes on 11 targets in 2012. Also, with Dennis Pitta out for the season and Anquan Boldin now in San Francisco, look for Rice’s receiving numbers to remain and possibly increase. – Adam Meyer

Mitch Stringer - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G5_20130823151408857_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G5_20130823151408857_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886044 #6 - Jamaal Charles %236+-+Jamaal+Charles Fantasy Football

Now, we get to the portion of the piece where any one of the next five running backs could make an argument to be drafted second-overall. I start with Jamaal Charles who only tallied 35 receptions for 236 yards on 48 targets last season. With coach Andy Reid now at the helm, one could imagine those numbers rising to LeSean McCoy-type 50+ receptions in 2013. – Adam Meyer

John Rieger - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G6_20130823151408858_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G6_20130823151408858_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886857 #7 - Trent Richardson %237+-+Trent+Richardson Fantasy Football

Knock on his health and 3.6 yards per carry all you want, but Trent Richardson’s 51 receptions for 367 yards landed him eighth in fantasy points among all running backs last season. Also, I think we can all agree a Norv Turner-controlled offense will be much better than anything Pat Shurmur could put together in Cleveland. – Adam Meyer

Ron Schwane - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G7_20130823151445862_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G7_20130823151445862_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886049 #8 - Marshawn Lynch %238+-+Marshawn+Lynch Fantasy Football

Like Alfred Morris, Marshawn Lynch isn’t a favorite in PPR leagues because of the read-option offense. In 2012, Lynch totaled 23 receptions for 196 yards on 30 targets. However, his rushing attempts and his average yards per attempt has increased every year since he’s joined Seattle. In 2012, Lynch ran the ball 315 times and averaged 5.0 yards per carry. – Adam Meyer

Daniel Shirey - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G8_20130823151448869_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G8_20130823151448869_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886858 #9 - Alfred Morris %239+-+Alfred+Morris Fantasy Football

After his inaugural season, Alfred Morris completed 2012 with the 10th-most fantasy stats among other running backs. Out of those 10 backs, only Steven Ridley had fewer targets and receptions than AlMo. Last year, Morris was targeted 16 times for 11 receptions and 77 yards. So, he’s the least appealing option in fantasy for PPR leagues and will carry heavy expectations in the running game for Washington. – Adam Meyer

Geoff Burke - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G9_20130823151447867_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G9_20130823151447867_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886047 #10 - Matt Forte %2310+-+Matt+Forte Fantasy Football

In 2012, Matt Forte received the fewest targets of his career (60) and still finished with the 10th-highest receptions out of the running backs. Now, Marc Trestman brings his air assault to Chicago where Forte is sure to exceed last season’s receiving numbers. Jay Cutler is the anti-Drew Brees (in more ways than one), because the Bears’ quarterback rarely spreads the ball around. Out of 955 plays (485 pass attempts and 470 rushing attempts), Forte and Brandon Marshall were targeted (or ran) 503 total times. That’s 53 percent! – Adam Meyer

Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886048 #11 - LeSean McCoy %2311+-+LeSean+McCoy Fantasy Football

No one can predict exactly how Chip Kelly’s offense will translate from college to the pros. I can only look at the numbers and project for 2013. Oregon running back, De’Anthony Thomas, led the team with 45 receptions in 2012. So, even though Shady McCoy barely broke the 200 fantasy point barrier last year, the X-factor of a coach makes me rank McCoy at this spot. – Adam Meyer

Howard Smith - USA TODAY Sports http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G11_20130823151449870_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2013/08/23/082313-FANTASY-NFL-top-12-RBs-LN-G11_20130823151449870_107_80.JPG
Fantasy Football 2186 43 Fantasy 2013: Top 12 PPR Running Backs 31886050 #12 - Darren Sproles %2312+-+Darren+Sproles Fantasy Football

Yes, Darren Sproles is the 12th-best running back to draft/own in a PPR league. For the second-straight year, Sproles led all running backs in receptions and receiving yards. Though his rushing stats weren’t much last year (244 yards and one TD), Sproles’ 75 receptions placed him 13th among other RBs in fantasy points. Also, Brees targeted Sproles 215 times in the last two seasons. – Adam Meyer
