Mickie James returning to WWE to face Asuka at NXT TakeOver: Toronto
Former WWE star Mickie James will be making her return at NXT TakeOver: Toronto.
Mickie James made a name for herself in wrestling by competing for WWE from 2005 to 2010. She notably had a storyline with Trish Stratus upon debut, and won the WWE Women’s and Divas Championships six times. It makes James one of the most decorated female WWE competitors they’ve had.
Since leaving WWE in 2010, though, James has bounced around the independent scene and TNA. She held the TNA Knockouts Championship three times during her last two stints there. Her last match on Impact Wrestling came on July 29, 2015, when she and husband Nick “Magnus” Aldis defeated James Storm and Serena.
Well, the 37-year-old is getting back in the ring, but with WWE for the first time in six years. At Thursday night’s NXT taping, NXT General Manager William Regal announced James as Asuka’s opponent for NXT TakeOver: Toronto. They will battle for The Empress of Tomorrow’s NXT Women’s Championship.

Kind of a big deal.
Asuka had been without an opponent for the upcoming TakeOver event. Ever since the call-ups of Alexa Bliss, Bayley, Carmella, and Nia Jax, NXT has had to work rookie women into the show. This includes Billie Kay, Ember Moon, Liv Morgan, and Peyton Royce. None have been built to be contenders for the NXT Women’s Championship, so it makes sense to bring in an outside name. It’s not just any outside name, though, as NXT struck gold by bringing back one of the top women’s stars of the millennium.
So on Saturday, November 19, Mickie James will make her return to WWE. Her and Asuka will get one of the top spots on the match card, and should deliver a solid bout. They are joining Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe and the culmination of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
