UFC Mexico Results: Ricardo Lamas Submits Jiu-Jitsu Ace Oliveira
Despite a serious weight discrepancy, Ricardo Lamas submits the submission specialist Charles Oliveira with a guillotine at UFC Mexico.
Ricardo Lamas has been near the top of the UFC featherweight division for some time now, but he has fallen into the black hole that is gatekeeper status after dropping a decision to Max Holloway in his last fight. He is 3-2 in his last five, being TKOd by Chad Mendes and outpointed by Max Holloway.
His last victory came back in November of last year, picking up a decision over Diego Sanchez. If he wants to keep any hopes of a title alive, he will need to make a statement over Charles Oliveira.
The fight hasn’t been the talk of Charles Oliveira recently. Instead, it’s been atrocious weight problems that have stolen headlines since yesterday. Oliveira missed weight by nine pounds, his fifth time missing weight.
Outside of the weight issues, Oliveira has been relatively successful in his last outings being 3-2, being submitted by former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and injuring his neck in a loss to Max Holloway.
The first round began with Lamas opening up early with a jab to the jaw. Lamas quickly threw him the ground with ferocity. Lamas worked his way to a favorable spot before dropping a vicious elbow. Oliveira reversed and pushed Lamas against the cage before slamming him to the ground, threw him into a choke and Lamas broke free with expertise, but Oliveira continued to control on the ground.
Oliveira worked his way to the back with a minute to go, but Lamas defended intelligently. Lamas fought hard for survival as Oliveira sunk a choke but Lamas survived the round. 10-9 for Charles in the first round.
The second round started with Oliveira taking it to the ground but Lamas ending up on top. Lamas continued to apply pressure to Oliveira and suddenly when Oliveira tries to reverse and gets caught in a choke! It didn’t look that deep but suddenly the tap comes and Ricardo Lamas keeps his title hopes alive!
The crowd exploded as their hometown fighter hoped on the cage celebrating his hard fought victory against a submission specialist who outweighed him by an entire weight class. Lamas gets himself back on track with his fifth UFC finish, tied for second in featherweight history. He is now back in serious featherweight contention, and just maybe we will see him fight the winner Edgar/Stephens.
Oliveira has now dropped two straight by guillotine choke. This loss mixed with the embarrassing missed weight could spell disaster for him. All title hopes have been set back for quite a while as he hopefully heads back to the drawing board. Hopefully he can get one last chance, but he needs to get himself together if he wants to keep this job.
