Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Although he struggled in round one, Sam Alvey took over late in round two and earned a decision victory at UFC Mexico.

In tonight’s UFC Fight Pass Featured Prelim, Sam Alvey will attempt to continue his momentum after stopping his last two opponents. Alvey was defeated by Elias Theodorou in June, but got right back on the horse with wins in July and August. Alvey started his UFC career with three straight first-round knockouts, then suffered two consecutive losses. Now he is back on a hot streak.

Alex Nicholson had his jaw crushed by Misha Cirkunov in his UFC debut, but bounced back with a first-round knockout over Devin Clark. “The Spartan” trains with the popular Mike Perry at American Top Team Orlando.

Nicholson started with kicks, possibly sensing a weakness in the game of Alvey after Theodorou defeated him with strictly kicks. Nicholson even caught Alvey with a head kick.

More rangy strikes from Nicholson, not engaging just yet. Alvey attempted to come in with a left and was caught below the belt with a kick. With over a minute left, Alvey effectively charged in with punches and Nicholson responded with a spin.  The same exchange happened with 40 seconds remaining. Interestingly, Nicholson turned around both times.

More kicks from Nicholson to start  the second round, and unfortunately once caught Alvey below the belt again. Both men landed punches simultaneously and Alvey was rocked after action resumed. Alvey began to utilize some rarely seen wrestling.

The fighters broke free and Alvey caught Nicholson with a heavy strike. Alvey also landed a heavy knee to the chin of Nicholson. With a minute left in the second round, Alvey started to fight with much more activity, catching Nicholson with several heavy lefts.

As time wound down in the second, Alvey had Nicholson on wobbly legs and was landing shot after shot on the Nicholson, who had his hands down.

Alvey picked up where he left off in round three with several lead left straights. Nicholson’s kick output waned in the third round, and he continued to eat lefts. With only half a round to go, Alvey was landing his left with ease.

Nicholson had very little left in the tank s the fight concluded, with Alvey earning a 29-28 on our scorecard. All three judges agreed, and Sam Alvey ended 2016 with three straight victories.
