UFC Belfast: Gegard Mousasi Set to Rematch Uriah Hall in New Headliner

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

UFC Fight Night 99 has lost its main event as Gunnar Nelson has withdrawn from the card due to injury.

Gunnar Nelson has had to pull out of yet another big time fight this time practically in his own back garden. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani first reported the fight was no longer the main event for UFC Belfast.

With no information yet being revealed about the extent of Gunnar Nelson’s injury, it is also unclear to whether his opponent Dong Hyun Kim will remain on the card.

Mousasi (40-6-2) is fresh off a dominant performance against Vitor Belfort at UFC 204 earlier this month where he finished the Brazilian via TKO. While it seems like a step back for Mousasi fighting a lower ranked opponent this fight is a personal affair as Hall was the better man the first time these two-faced off.

Since the first fight with Hall, “The Dreamcatcher” has won three in a row in the space of eight months over Thales Leites, Thiago Santos and Vitor Belfort. With UFC gold on the horizon this could well be a dangerous fight for his future title aspirations.

Hall (12-7) has not tasted victory since the upset win over Mousasi and has lost two straight in the past year against Derek Brunson and Robert Whittaker.

Known for his nasty stand up game which has led to some highlight reel knockouts, this fight is an extremely important one for Hall who finds himself on the wrong end of a two fight skid. A loss would be disastrous and questions will be raised over his future in the UFC.

UFC Fight Night 99 takes place Nov.19 in Belfast, Northern Ireland and will be headlined by this interesting and very important fight for both Gegard Mousasi and Uriah Hall, both in need of a victory. Ireland’s own Neil Seery and U.K fan favourite Ross Pearson will also feature on the card.
