UFC 205: Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson Ends in a Majority Draw
What might be the fight of the night, possibly a candidate for fight of the year, ended in a majority draw between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson for the UFC welterweight championship.
The judges scored the fight 47-47, 47-47 and 48-47. UFC octagon announcer Bruce Buffer incorrectly announced it as a split decision victory for Woodley. After some confusion mid interview with Woodley, Buffer announced a correction, calling it a majority draw with Woodley remaining as champion.
Woodley keeps his 16-3 record as Thompson also holds on to his 13-1 record, but both fighters now have a tie added into their record.
After no contact for two minutes in the first round, Thompson throws a kick, which was caught by Woodley. That sent the rest of the first round to the ground. Woodley stayed on top of Thompson, dominating the first round. Woodley compiled some punches and elbows, which led to a bloody ‘Wonderboy’ at the end of the round.

The fighters remained on their feet for a majority of what appeared to be a close second round, possibly going in Thompson’s favor. The fighters were also on their feet in the third round, but Woodley delivered more significant strikes and was victorious in the round.
After a quiet three rounds, Woodley added some fuel to the match midway through the fourth round with a malicious knockdown. Woodley closed in quickly with several punches. Thompson surprised everyone by surviving, while getting up on his feet. Woodley appeared to have locked Thompson in a tight guillotine choke. However, Thompson survived and escaped the submission.
Joe Rogan credited referee Dan Miragliotta for not stopping the match in a situation where most referees probably would have gotten in between fighters. Thompson proved Miragliotta made the right no-call, allowing the fight to continue into the fifth round.
Woodley showed signs of being gassed out in the fifth round. Thompson took advantage and delivered more significant strikes to win the round.
Thompson’s seven-fight win streak was snapped. Woodley, who is the most recent UFC fighter to capture a championship, keeps his title moving forward. But there is no doubt that the UFC will look to schedule this fight again to allow these two to settle the score.
