UFC 205: McGregor Defeats Alvarez, Makes UFC History
If people didn’t think Conor McGregor owned the UFC before, they do now. The featherweight champion made UFC history becoming the first active two-division champion.
Conor McGregor defeated former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez via TKO in the second round to earn the lightweight title at UFC 205 in the UFC’s first visit to New York City, on Saturday.
McGregor had previously been slated to fight for the 155-pound belt at UFC 196 against former champion Rafael dos Anjos. RDA withdrew due to injury opening the door for what became a 2-fight run against Nate Diaz going 1-1 in those fights.
After the Diaz rematch at UFC 202, McGregor was booked against Alvarez for the main event of the biggest UFC card ever and the first at Madison Square Garden.
The fight was as simple as McGregor said it would be. Alvarez had a difficult time getting close enough to land any shots without McGregor countering with his left hand.

McGregor dropped Alvarez three times in the first round and in the second he finished the job with a beautiful combination then finished the fight with the ground and pound.
Alvarez could not get close enough to get the takedown, he could not avoid the counter left hand, and he could not get his game going whatsoever.
It was exactly what McGregor said would happen.
The post-fight interview was full of expletives with the two-division champion wondering where his second belt was at.
He thanked the Irish fans who have traveled around the world to go to his fights, and grabbed his second belt to show it off in the octagon.
And of course he had to make sure it was a genuine Conor McGregor interview.
“From the bottom of my heart….I’d like to apologize to absolutely nobody!”
The two-division champion, the first to do it in the promotion, has made history in the exact way that he predicted he would. And the MMA world loves him for it.
