UFC 203: Yancy Medeiros Chokes Out Spencer After Head Kick
UFC 203 kicked off the right way when Yancy Medeiros submitted Sean Spencer after a dull first round.
Both men desperately needed victories after their last bouts. Yancy Medeiros was brutally battered by Francisco Trinaldo, and if not for a poor split decision, he would have been on a three fight losing streak. Sean Spencer actually was on a three fight losing streak coming into this fight after getting knocked out by wily UFC veteran Mike Pyle.
This fight became the lone Fight Pass prelim after the very late injury to CB Dollaway.
The first significant strike came halfway through the first round when Sean Spencer snapped Yancy Medeiros’ head back with a right hand. It was a very tentative first round, but Medeiros had a tendency to leave himself open for counters.
Later in the round a solid head kick landed for Medeiros and he got his confidence. Medeiros is close with the Diaz brothers, and made that clear by doing their famous “What?” taunt. The fighters finally began to open up at the end of the round, with Medeiros favoring kicks. Although Medeiros landed the most significant strike, Spencer was much more active.
Medeiros came out like a man possessed in the second round. Spencer was hit with another head kick, and this time he was knocked down. Medeiros dove in for a guillotine immediately, and after a scramble ended up in mount. Spencer gave up his back and was subsequently choked out. Easily Yancy Medeiros’ best UFC victory.
Yancy Medeiros entered the welterweight division in fashion, finishing off Sean Spencer under a minute into the second round. The former lightweight may have matchup problems in terms of strength with some of the wrestling-based welterweights in the division.
