Here is how the UFC 203 heavyweight title fight between Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem played out

On Saturday, September 10, reigning UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic put his title on the line against Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC 203. The entire event went down at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Miocic, a Cleveland native, earned his heavyweight crown with a stunning first round knockout over then champion Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198 in May. Overeem, a former Strikeforce & Dream champion as well as the 2010 K-1 Grand Prix winner, entered their title fight riding a four fight win streak. Prior to squaring off against Miocic, fans saw the Dutchman walk away with a violent second round knockout over former champion Andrei Arlovski.

Here is how the fight unfolded, round-by-round, including FanSided’s scoring of the fight.

ROUND 1: With the crowd on their feet, the two heavyweights meet in the center of the Octagon. After a shorting feeling out process, Overeem took the outside as he circled away from Miocic’s lead left hand. Overeem landed a thunder body kick before dropping the champion with a hard shot. Overeem immediately swarmed in looking for the guillotine but Miocic escaped and chased after his fleeing opponent.

After another flurry from Overeem, Miocic connected with his own body kick. Walking his opponent back into the fence, Miocic looked to unload with a barrage of strikes. Overeem survived the onslaught but Miocic continued to press the attack, chasing his opponent all over the cage. After evading a looping haymaker from Overeem, Miocic secured a takedown with 45-seconds left. With his opponent squirming beneath him, Miocic unloaded on Overeem’s kull with a hurricane of punches. After seeing Overeem go limp, the referee was force to jump in and stop the fight.
