UFC 168 gets featherweight battle

Published Sep. 26, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

The UFC’s year-end event in Las Vegas continues to fill up.

Late Wednesday night, the organization announced that veteran featherweight competitors Dennis Siver (21-9) and Manny Gamburyan would square off at the December 28 event headlined by the highly anticipated championship rematches between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva, and Ultimate Fighter coaches Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. No word yet on whether this bout is destined for the main card or the preliminary portion of the event, which will air on FOX Sports 1.

Both Siver and Gamburyan have enjoyed success since transitioning to the featherweight division after beginning their UFC in different weight classes.

Gamburyan, a finalist on Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter, made his debut in the 145-pound ranks in June 2009, winning his first three appearances to earn crack at then-WEC champion Jose Aldo. Following his loss to Aldo, Gamburyan dropped his next two contests before righting the ship with a decision win over Michihiro Omigawa last summer on FOX. Most recently, the 32-year-old judoka – and assistant coach on Team Rousey on this season of The Ultimate Fighter – earned a second straight win, defeating Cole Miller by unanimous decision in August on the inaugural UFC Fight Night card on FOX Sports 1.

Once a contender in the lightweight division, the Russian-born, German-based kickboxer Siver quickly climbed the featherweight ranks, earning back-to-back decision wins in his first two divisional outings. His momentum was halted this summer by surging title hopeful Cub Swanson, but with 10 wins in his last 13 fights, the stocky and powerful Siver is capable of putting together another run to return to contention.

UFC 168 takes place on Saturday, December 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
